WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – The Wilmington Police Department is calling out WECT for misreporting a story this morning regarding a “robbery spree.”

The station originally reported, “Police in Wilmington are on the lookout for a man believed to have committed at least three robberies on Tuesday morning,” and that the Taco Bell and Travel Lodge on Market St. were robbed as well as a home.

A spokesperson for WPD says none of that is true. Police reports from overnight show that a person sitting outside the Taco Bell was robbed of $20. She said she didn’t call police because the robber only took $20. Then, she said, she went back to a room at the Travel Lodge with two other people, and the same man who had robbed her a few minutes earlier came to the room. When one of the other people in the room let him in, the victim ran into the bathroom, locked herself in, and hid $800. Then, she reported, she unlocked the bathroom door. The intruder ransacked the bathroom, but didn’t find the cash, and he left.

WECT has since deleted the story from its website and reported the “new developments” at Noon without admitting any mistakes.

So, was any further research done on this breaking story by WWAY? On who’s end was the miscommunication?

Oh wait, I just checked WECT, and they’ve clarified that the discrepancy comes from the dispatcher. You’d think a news station would understand the concept of a developing news story. Much easier to post a scandalous headline and half-report a story on the competition, I guess.

Just decided I will NEVER tune in to WWAY ever again

  • Guest20 says:

OK, then you shouldn’t post on this WWAY forum either. They put the same news on here that they do on their TV station.

    Nice knowing you….

If this is the best “news” reporting you can do, why bother!

WWAYTV 3 is a joke. I work at a major company in downtown Wilmington with over 2000 local employess……nobody here watches them. We joke that they should just change their station to the weather channel becuase that is all they concentrate on. Instead of reporting the news, they start their news cast with weather….then ever 5 minutes they cut back to the weather….now the weather…..weather…weather. Where is the freaking news??????? And when they do report on the news, they start every sentence with “Only here on WWAYtv 3 news”…..like we can’t get the information from anywhere else. Local weather used to be important…..now they most people have cable TV, dish Network, Direct TV and oh, what is that other thing called….the Internet.

In closing, WWAYTV 3 needs to fire everybody and start over if they are going to get any respect.

Concerned – thanks for your feedback. You sure are aware of many of the elements in the newscast for someone who never watches! Have a great week!!

Does WWAY feel so inferior to WECT that they have to resort to this type of adolescent behavior? The only thing missing at the end of this “News Story”(sic) was; Na-na-na-boo-boo.

It does sound like WECT didn’t report the story correctly…for whatever reason…but, then again, WWAY didn’t exactly do a bang up job either!
