ELIZABETH CITY, NC (AP) — A North Carolina food bank has topped a national online poll, and is getting 30,000 pounds of food as a result.
The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reports that the Food Bank of the Albemarle was the top vote-getter in a Facebook poll launched by Arkansas-based Tyson Foods.
The company will be shipping the donation in the next 20 to 30 days. A Tyson statement says 30,000 pounds of food is the equivalent of about 120,000 meals.
Food bank executive director Liz Reasoner says the win was the result of effective social media use and networking with other North Carolina food banks.
Nearly 38,000 votes were cast in the contest. The two runners-up in Arizona and Mississippi will also get donations from Tyson.
