Practice squad update: Spencer heads to Detroit; Ross continues to wait, “not the case anymore”

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — Practice squads in the NFL undergo changes throughout the season.

North Brunswick High School graduate Owen Spencer has been added to the practice squad of the 4-0 NFL Detroit Lions. Spencer played college football at NC State. Detroit will be Spencer’s third team this season. The wide receiver has been with Seattle and Tennessee so far.

UPDATE as of October 8th: Spencer was released by the Lions on October 8th.

New Hanover High grad Jay Ross is still waiting to join an NFL team. Ross was dropped by the Green Bay Packers prior to the start of the regular season. The defensive lineman played college football at East Carolina.

UPDATE as of October 24th: Ross was signed by the Buffalo Bills during the team’s off week. He was officially added to the Buffalo practice roster on October 24th. WWAY originally reported the pickup on Ross on October 22nd.

SW Onslow grad Kendric Burney has been dropped by the Carolina Panthers practice squad. The cornerback played college football at North Carolina.

you had a piece last week indicating Mr. Ross was on his way to Miami to try out. Did that not bear fruit for him?

Here’s a link to the update that we posted on Jay Ross shortly after he returned to Wilmington. In summary, the Dolphins did not sign him. The former New Hanover Wildcat is still without a team entering week five of the 2011 season.
