WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some local leaders hit the streets today to make sure people who need help are living in a safe place.
It’s Fire Prevention Week and to start it off, the Wilmington Fire Department and New Hanover County Fire Rescue are targeting senior citizens in their effort to provide safety information. Firefighters are delivering Meals on Wheels all week, talking to senior residents about fire safety and checking their smoke detectors.
“We’ve been doing this several years now, and we find that a lot of your residential fires are where you have elderly folks, and we think it’s very important to start off the week out checking smoke detectors and making sure they have a safety method in their home,” New Hanover Co. Fire Marshal Matt Davis said.
Today Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and New Hanover Co. Commission Chair Jonathan Barfield joined Wilmington Fire Chief Buddy Martinette and New Hanover County Fire Chief Donnie Hall to deliver meals and check smoke detectors.
