WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you’ve been to downtown Wilmington in the past couple months you’ve likely noticed construction and increased traffic along N. 3rd Street.

The city says the work to replace utility lines is still on schedule even though crews have been slowed by rain and unforeseen underground gas storage tanks left behind from old gas stations.

The work has caused lane closures and other obstacles that can be some a headache for drivers and pedestrians.

“Downtown is the most busiest area in Wilmington, so it’s a confusion, you know, especially at 12 o’clock lunch breaks and stuff. It’s total chaos,” pedestrian Timothy McMillon said.

The construction and repaving should be done by September of next year.

I go through that area almost daily, and let me tell ya, it is more often than not you see NOTHING being worked on… Parked equipment, torn up asphalt and plenty of barriers and lane closures… very rarely is any one actually working. this must be another obama stimulus shovel ready project from 2008.
