WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — Eight freshmen joined several returnees as the 2011-12 UNCW men’s basketball team met members of the news media during the program’s annual Media Day on Wednesday. The event was held in Hanover Hall since renovations to Trask Coliseum are in full speed with Midnite Madness right around the corner. It’s a talented freshman class that includes former New Hanover Wildcat standout Freddie Jackson. “I’ll have to work harder this year. At New Hanover my ninth grade year I had to start from the bottom and work my way up,” Jackson said. “Now that I’m at UNCW I’ve got to do it all over again.”
The Seahawks hope to be able to improve on last year’s 13 win season. Enthusiasm is high. Experience is a bit thin, yet there are three returning starters. Buzz Peterson is back for his second season at UNC Wilmington as the Seahawks head coach. “At least we have some height this year. That’ll be something different. We will definitely look like a team going through the airport. We are young though,” Peterson said. “This has got to be one of the youngest teams in the country.”
The Seahawks, who begin their second season under Buzz Peterson, open practice early Saturday in preparation for their first exhibition on Oct. 29 against St. Andrews.
