BAKERSVILLE, NC (AP) — Mitchell County authorities are investigating the discovery of homemade explosives outside an elementary school after a student was burned.

Sheriff Donald Street says a student at Gouge Elementary School in Bakersville found one of the devices.

The school was closed Thursday while police, deputies and the State Bureau of Investigation searched for evidence.

Officials say a student opened a soda bottle containing the explosive Wednesday after finding it in a parking lot. The student dropped the bottle and some of the liquid splashed on another student’s leg.

The sheriff says that boy was taken to a hospital for treatment of a burn.

Another bottle was found in the parking lot and two more beside the school.

No arrests have been made.
