WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- D.C. Virgo Middle School is closed this school year, but Tuesday night the New Hanover County School Board discussed options to reopen the school. The main option the school system is considering is opening DC Virgo back up as a charter school.

During Tuesday's work session school board members reviewed a charter school application regarding the future of the downtown Wilmington school.

"The question is, are we going to pursue a charter school concept," school board member Derrick Hickey said. "Or are we going to pursue a magnet school concept?"

The proposed charter school would be a public-private partnership between the school system and the Blue Ribbon Commission, a non-profit that looks to improve educational and social conditions in the downtown area known as the Youth Enrichment Zone.

In order to move forward, the school system must send the charter school application to the state by November 10. With so many questions raised, like uniforms, transportation, and quality of teachers, the decision to move forward with the charter school concept may not come so easy. Hickey thinks the decision to open Virgo as a charter is an easy one.

"This is going to be an innovated approach to education. I'm excited, I'm all in favor of it," he said.

Several parents and citizens did attend Tuesday's work session. Some were unsure about the charter school concept but open to the idea.

"I'm really a public school person," said resident Joyce Huguelet. "I think we have to try new things so I'm open to see how a charter school might work."

No decision was made Tuesday night. The board will once again discuss the charter application and possibly vote to go forward with the process during the next board meeting on November 1.
