WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)-- Putting America back to work. That's what President Obama hopes to accomplish with his American Jobs Act. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is a staunch supporter of that act. He was in Wilmington today to discuss the proposal and to tour a manufacturing company that could play a key role in improving our information infrastructure.

At Corning, Secretary Geithner got a first hand look at fiber optics, a key component in today's information age. He feels Corning is one of many companies that would benefit greatly from the American Jobs Act, which would invest heavily in all types of infrastructure, including broadband.

"To help create a stronger tax incentives for businesses, help get more Americans back to work, put more money in the hands of Americans and it is very, very important we see Congress act in the next week and months to help strengthen growth here at home," Geithner said.

Speaking of home, the American Jobs Act impacts North Carolina in several different ways. It would provide nearly 798-million dollars in highway and transit infrastructure, which is estimated to add more than 10,000 jobs. But that doesn't necessarily mean out-of-work North Carolinians would be the ones who get those jobs.

"What you can do at the state level is try to make it a more attractive place for businesses to come and build and that depends on lot of different factors," Geithner explained, "It depends on the quality of the workforce, they can rely on it. It depends on the quality of infrastructure, depends on the quality of the education system and access of local talent. Those are basic fundamental things and all things flow from that."

The plan would also expand the payroll tax cut passed last December.

"Every business in this state and every person with a job will have lower taxes in January if Congress acts on the president's proposals and every government in this state would have more resources to keep teachers in the classroom and first responders on the job."

Secretary Geithner didn't just talk about the American Jobs Act, he also talked about the global economy and how that could play a role in our economic recovery. He says the European crisis is one of the biggest challenges affecting growth around the world, so a lot in the US depends on Europe's ability to restore confidence.

Ya and then in

Ya and then in 2013.....after the long parade thru the plant hundreds of us Americans got laid off.....the month corning opens a plant in India.......ya corning cares about American jobs alright......you betcha.....they took all that incentive money and sent it straight to India.

Very nice to see true

Very nice to see true patriots with common sense in Wilmington.

Why did Timmy Boy venture out of DC to the hinterlands of North Carolina? Will we see Corning in the headlines soon, receiving more magic Bernanke $$$ as part of some "green jobs" scheme? Probably. How much would Corning exec's sell out for? $10 mil? $100 mil? Half a billion, like Solyndra?

What mis-educated "journalists" just don't get - is that EVERY. SINGLE. DOLLAR. of that $798 mil in the "American Jobs Act" - had to be EARNED.

Somebody had to dig a ditch - or bus tables - or stand for hours at the Walmart check out line, as a cashier - or run a combine in the cotton fields til late at night - or drive a truck - or clean toilets in fancy/schmancy bank office buildings - or bust butt running a business, working 16 hrs/day, pouring heart & soul into his/her life's dream ..... to EARN THAT DOLLAR THAT GOES RIGHT TO THE CORRUPT DEM PARTY MONEY LAUNDERING/VOTE BUYING MACHINE, A/K/A GVT PROGRAMS & GREEN JOBS SCHEMES.

Do you get it now?

But

BUT BUT...that money is Federal Money...its FREE...it comes from Obamas pockets...

Geithner pushing Temporary Union Work Act

You didn't mention those employees that refused to be on the same grounds as Timmy Turbo Tax Geithner. Unlike Mr. Weak In The Knees....
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SHOWED THEIR DISGUST BY STAYING AWAY!
Stealing from Americans to prop up failing companies is wrong, And everyone who thinks it will work, obviously hasn't a clue that STIMULUS 1 DID NOTHING but help us get unemployment up to over 10%.

Ms. Cuevas

You need to spell Americans with a capital "A" always!

Please DO NOT make this typographical error ever again in YOUR lifetime.

It is unacceptable. Proof read your work so that you do not insult your American audience, especially when Occupy Wallstreeters are being supported by The American Nazi party and the Council on American Islamic Relations, an organization with terrorist ties.

You did it twice, but when writing about Obama's already failed American Jobs Act, you got it right and spelled America with a capital A.

Now, geithner's name doesn't have to be capitalized, since he is a tax evader.

Getting tired of rude comments .. by everybody .. including you

An active interchange of thoughts is constructive .. Strident, foaming-at-the mouth stuff is de-constuctive .. Your comments are essentially accurate in fact and Ms. Cuevas really does need to tighten up her work by a considerable degree if she wants to consider herself a professional journalist but can't we all just put a moritorium on the hate-speak? ..
Statements like "Please DO NOT make this typographical error ever again in YOUR lifetime. It is unacceptable. Proof read your work so that you do not insult your American audience" I find to be didactically over the top. Hopefully others agree. No one left you in charge of everything any more than anybody left anyone in charge of everything so please try to be aware of that when making a comment.
I'm hoping that being polite is still an acceptable form of behavior. If not, our great American society is surely doomed.

American Jobs Act...

aka Stimulus II...a boondoggle just like the first version. Billions in additional debt...and no jobs to show for it.

Did anyone bother to ask this bozo....

...how this one could possibly work, when the two previous stimulus packages failed so miserably?

Government bureaucrat

Little Timmy does not have a clue about how to stimulate the economy. You do not need an Ivy League education to understand basic economic principles. This Administration's dysfunctional fiscal policies, tax policies, burdensome regulations have handcuffed American industry, unless they are involved in the fraudulent green technology movement.Wealth is created in the private sector Timmy. The government's only role in the economy should be putting conditions in place that are conducive to private sector expansion. The private sector are the ones who support this monster( BIG GOVERNMENT).The jobs bill does not accomplish anything , except putting more public sector employees to work ,who have to be financed by the private sector( the wealth creators). The financial gimmicks have been an absolute failure(TARP,HARP,Cash for Clunkers, shovel ready jobs and the Summer of Recovery). There is no doubt our nation is in peril but you clowns(Obama,Geithner, and Bernanke) are not the ones who will lead us to prosperity.Expect the status quo, if these clowns have four more years in office of turning us into a dependency culture and drowning us and our children in to an insurmountable debt.EVERY economic projection by this Administration has been off the mark!No wonder the markets and consumers have no confidence in this Administration.Any Republican candidate running for President should make abolishing the IRS and the EPA their top priority upon taking office. You would see a dramatic and positive turnaround for American industry and consumers.

Geithner's Visit

The problem is that Geithner has no credibility with the American people. And the jobs act is simply a re-election gimmick.

its a bs political scheme

corning dont need a bailout. all the fiber the wilmington plant is being shiped to china and other foreign countrys. all geithner did today is slow production down for a company that didnt recieve money and dont need it, Corning is one of the few businesses that still hire not because of our government but because they dont need our government this so called bailout pkg will have absolutely no effect on corning and its just a ploy to take away the attention the government blew on wasted dreams and scams send me a few billion so i can file bankruptcy after i get a check.

Treasury Sec

Sorry dude, you just don't get it... We're tired of
the continued excuses. You all blamed Bush
and sold the public on the fixes yet my health
care premium will be more this next year and
the coverage will be even less....so thank you for
health care "reform"

It is disappointing that you

It is disappointing that you did not have a professional journalist write this article. In the third paragraph you have a number in place of a word, two misspelled words, and a missing comma. With so many mistakes, readers cannot trust that the quote is even accurate. A news channel website should employ only professional writers.

Wow

and readers think I'm tough.

It's unfortunate readers want to focus on punctuation rather than the important issues.

The Department of Labor released a report last week. North Carolina led the nation in the loss of jobs during the preceeding month.

Read that again. North Carolina led the nation in the loss of jobs. No other state had a greater loss of jobs than North Carolina.

So Geitner brings the monkey and organ and plays another chorus to promote the Administration's plan to promote jobs and stimulate the economy. The first two failed; let's go with another.

The White House occupant -- he flies all over the country trying to promote a program which is too little; too late; and clearly an attempt to influence the 2012 elections.

Meanwhile, Smiley and entourage prepare, if they have not already departed, for the junket, on the taxpayers' dime, to China and Japan.

Well, if you voted for them in 2008, are you feeling the change yet? Did you get exactly what you hoped for?

Focus

A response I post here will not go to Secretary Geithner; it will go to the news outlet. So that's who I addressed.

If a news organization publishes a story it should be written by a qualified professional and edited by an experienced editor. When not even the most basic care is taken in its preparation the credibility of the reporting and content evaporates. How do we know any part of the article is accurate when the portion we can evaluate, the writing, shows it to be the work of a careless and slipshod person? Why should we feel comfortable that any other part of the reporting is accurate? And when the editor doesn't care either the judgement of the news outlet as a whole is suspect.
