WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With the North Carolina primary still more than six months away, it appears the Republican Party is hedging its bets in the race to challenge Rep. Mike McIntyre.

The National Republican Congressional Committee today announced Ilario Pantano and David Rouzer are “On the Radar” candidates. The NRCC says it’s the important second step in the “Young Guns” program, which recruits strong candidates for both open-seat and challenger races.

Pantano and Rouzer are both running for North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District.

“We are looking forward to working with Ilario Pantano, who has already proven himself by coming so close to victory last cycle and having a strong grassroots organization,” NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions said in a statement. “Ilario Pantano’s dedication and experience enables him to advocate effectively for pro-growth policies and fight the failed status quo in Washington. This will stand in stark contrast to the Obama-Pelosi record of spending, borrowing and taxing that North Carolina families and small businesses know has failed.”

Sessions had similarly kind words for Rouzer.

“We are looking forward to working with David Rouzer, who has already proven himself by meeting rigorous benchmarks in the ‘Young Guns’ program,” Sessions said. “David Rouzer’s dedication and experience enables him to advocate effectively for pro-growth policies and fight the failed status quo in Washington. This will stand in stark contrast to the Obama-Pelosi record of spending, borrowing and taxing that North Carolina families and small businesses know has failed.”

Rouzer and Pantano are vying for the Republican nomination for the 7th District seat. The winner will challenge incumbent Democrat McIntyre.

That means that you’ve obviously been trained in the Geneva Protocols. Therefore you know that there is absolutely NO requirement that an enemy combatant be ARMED before he is engaged. Unless he is injured, sick, or otherwise incapable of fighting (such as a pilot still descending in his parachute) he is fair gane and can be engaged. He doesn’t even have to take hostile action….and you KNOW all that!

Here’s another thing that you know….if you are armed and have two unarmed combatants advancing on you and you DON’T engage them, you’re going to wind up dead when they take away your weapon and kill you with it.

You know all of that, so don’t pretend to be so naive.

Here’s my take on Pantano’s actions. For the first time in theater he was facing TRUE “danger close,” and he was scared out of his wits. He emptied two magazines in pure terror. The note was an attempt to regain standing as a brave warrior who wasn’t the least bit scared. Macho counts in the Marine mind. We all want to think of ourselves as John Wayne, not Barney Fife.

I’ll be voting for McIntyre who will likely be re-elected anyway. He does a great job. I just wish that once we could have a local Congressional election without the lies about McIntyre being a liberal and Pantano being a murderer.

…isn’t easy on soft tissue, but it can be done when you have intersecting wound channels. When rounds hit a large boney structure such as the pelvic girdle or cranial vault, it’s as easy as determining which round entered a windshield first: It’s all in the cracks and where they stop.

You Pantano haters amaze me. You’re in the same league as the 9/11 conspiracy crowd. The JAG investigating officer, a three-star general, and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology all joined in a conspiracy HOW MANY years ago so that a lieutenant could someday run for Congress if he wanted to?

Here’s my final take on it. They were insurgents. They had likely killed Americans. They were bad guys, and dead bad guys is ALWAYS a good thing. Pantano killed them, and while his methods may not have been by the book, the end result was good. Dead bad guys.

I like Mike, and while I won’t vote for Pantano, I’d have no reservations about going into combat with him. That “yellow streak” you imagine didn’t stop him from coming out on top.

I read the report also. You forgot to mention they were not armed. Anyone could have seen that after the first magazine. “No better friend, no worst enemy” note on corpses? Did we not learn anything in Viet Nam?
Why can’t we speak of his character or lack of it? Don’t we want our leaders to be above reproach? Do you not think that this incident tells a lot about someone’s fundamental make-up?
We pillory our public officials for far less. A senator that plays footsie in a public bathroom gets treated far worse in the press than a guy that arguably committed murder.
My question is: Is this the kind of person we want to represent us? I’m still disappointed in your response.
His politics are secondary to his character and judgment.

The Armed Forces Pathological Institute exhumed the bodies and conducted autopsies AFTER the decision was made to not send him to the court martial.

The autopsies substantiated Pantano’s claim that they were advancing toward him, as many shots entered from the front.

A subsequent search of the house they had just exited revealed a substantial amount of arms and equipment for constructing IEDs. They were definitely bad guys, and as they were evidently advancing on Pantano, he could legitimately engage them. I would have.

I am not saying that Pantano’s actions were completely appropriate, tasteful, or what I would have done in the given circumstance. I have better fire discipline.

If you think his “pray-n-spray” behavior is restricted to scared lieutenants in the field, take time to research how many police officers are well into their second or even third magazine when involved in a shootout. I’m sure you can recall the first time you took fire, and when it’s coming from only a few feet away, it’s easy to get….overly motivated.

No on is in a position to question the convening authority who decided not to send Lieutenant Pantano to a court martial to face charges of conduct unbecoming a Marine, the only charge recommended by the investigating officer. In a “war” in which we nailed troops constantly for any minor infraction of ROE or policy, why would Pantano have escaped prosecution if he was truly guilty of anything beyond being scared and stupid?

Why can’t you people attack Panatno on his politics? Why is “He killed two guys” the only tool in your kit?

I agree with you, Pantano was scared out of his wits. But what I will disagree with you on is the autopsy report. How is it that the autopsy report was able to tell what shots came first, the ones in the back or the front? Shoot a guy in the back and he falls, face up or down depends on the flip of the coin. The question might be, were the notes pinned on the front of the Iraqis or the back because I seriously doubt Pantano moved the bloody guys to attempt to administer any sort of aid.

How appropriate that Pantano is listed as a “Young Gun”. Just ask the Iraqi’s that he killed that were unarmed.

This guy needs to give up his fantasy of being elected to anything in this county and get a job. A real job where he has to go in and work for a living.

The world has changed a lot in the last couple of years. McIntyre may be a jerk, but I have not heard of him shooting any unarmed civilians lately.

Do we want someone for a representative that had an Article 32 investigation for shooting unarmed civilians, reloading and shooting them some more and then leaving a note on them? Personally, I think the good God-fearing people in Eastern NC deserve better.

The only time democrats would fear him is if he had a gun.

2015 years 10 months ago

Tell me one place that I smeared him. I did not get one fact wrong. The problem is his lack of judgment and lack of character. You, sir, are the one with no shame.
By the way, I’m not a democrat. You don’t have to be a democrat to know that this man is a loose cannon.

2015 years 10 months ago

It’s not the Democrats, it’s the Republicans who fear Pantano – and rightly. If Pantano were to get the Repubican nomination for a second time, it would make the GOP look a part of the Mafia. Nominating a cold-blooded killer for Congress is crazy. Rouzer’s the one.

Just look at the posts under this article! It ought to be clear who the democrats fear. Certainly not the establisments choice, Mr Rouzer. Pantano served honorably and was cleared of any and all wrong doing. The democrats fear Mr Pantano and will do anything to eliminate him early on. They’ll even crawl out from under their rocks and try to smear him as they’ve done in the above posts. They have no shame. DD

Pantano could cure lepers and restore eyesight to the blind, and someone who has likely never been to combat and doesn’t even know the purpose of an Article 32 chimes in, “Well, I wouldn’t want my eyesight restored by some guy who was the subject of an Article 32 hearing.”

Good God, people, you all know that I voted for McIntyre and will again, but your inane vendetta against Pantano has to stop. He killed two men who very much needed killing, and was never sent to a court martial.

Let it go, or continue sounding like total idiots who don’t know what you’re talking about.

Your choice.

I have been in combat. They had people stopped on the side of the road, out of their vehicle, emptied his magazine in them, reloaded, and emptied that one. Then he left a note on them. As a professional military man, are you saying this is acceptable behavior? At what point were they no longer a threat?

I have seen Article 32 investigations go the old boy network way where they wouldn’t indict, even though they were guilty, because it would reflect badly on the command and the military in general. I just lost a lot of respect for you if you think what he did was justifiable behavior. There is no honor in what he did.

Either person would be superior to the “walk the fence” McIntyre. Those who side with Iraq’s position when our soldiers were doing their duty are over the line. Pantano was cleared of any charges.
