WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Commission Chair Jonathan Barfield has been reappointed to the National Association of Counties Transportation Steering Committee. It’s another honor for Barfield, who recently became the only county commissioner in the state to reach the mentor level in the Local Elected Leaders Academy.
Over the past two years, Barfield has taken classes and workshops across the state to better understand his role as a commissioner and the roles of other county officials. Barfield says he’s also learned from other county commissioners around the state about how to better handle similar issues in our county.
“Knowledge is power,” he said. “For me, knowledge just opens up doors and gives you greater wisdom in knowing how to make things happen for the citizens of your community. Without the knowledge and wisdom that you get from taking these courses, you’re not going to be as effective as you could be, and my goal is to be an effective commissioner for all the citizens of our county.”
Barfield says the main issues facing our area are solid waste and what to do with our trash and the process of bringing companies here to create jobs.
