Would-be robber in hospital after clerk turns tables

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A robbery attempt last night went very bad for the robber. The hold-up at 13th and Dawson Streets did not have the outcome the would-be thief had planned. When a young man entered the Dawson Street Minimart he had robbery on his mind, but the clerk turned the tables. Today it had the neighborhood talking.

"I heard he got his ass beat by the store owner. Excuse my language on the TV," neighbor Marcus Baker. "You can't come rob somebody then get your gun taken. That's what I heard: got his gun taken, beat up."

Another clerk, who didn't want to give her full name, said Thursday night a young man entered the mini mart around 9:30, pulled a gun and robbed the clerk on duty. But as he waited with the stolen money in his backpack, he decided to steal an iPod from a child in the store. That child's father was the clerk who was just robbed. He saw his chance to make his move

"The clerk, he took care of his family," the co-worker, who would only give her first name Karen, said. "He took care of his store. He did the best thing that was suitable for that situation."

Karen says the clerk jumped the robber. She says they fought through the store until the clerk grabbed the gun and fired.

At least one bullet hit the robber, who fell by the door where he begged people in the store to call help... for him

"I hate that a child got hurt, but a child took a big decision coming in this store trying to rob it, and he wanted more," Karen said.

Police won't release the name of the robber, who we've learned is a juvenile. They say he is in the hospital with "significant injuries" and won't be charged while he is being treated.

We're told the store clerk suffered a minor injury to his hand. He is OK. By the way, today is his birthday.

In this life, there are two choices: good or bad

Good choice:
Stay at home, go to school, get a job
Bad choice:
Walk into someone's place of business and pull a gun

Good choice:
Stay at home, go to school, get a job
Bad choice:
Steal someone's money and then try to steal a child's Ipod

This young man made bad choices all around and it got him shot. Just perhaps it might make him think the next time he decides that he doesn't want to work for his money, he will just steal someone elses. His next victim might not miss!

He should have shot him in the head, but the vacuum that would have created would have sucked in everything for several blocks around. The fool got what he deserved, but I will bet some jacka** will post that he should be let go and the clerk be arrested. I say kill more robbers, and they might think twice, and consider is it really worth my life for $50.00.

the reports on this story have so many holes. was the "robber" armed? whose gun was he shot with, his own or the store owner's? and how did he "somehow" get money out of the register? why was he waiting around after he got said money? is this a case of an idiotic robber or a case of a kid bullying another kid, and the dad/store owner got mad? either way, seems like sensationalist reporting; too many holes to tell yet. it's easy to get mad; takes more effort to get educated. use the cameras. reserve judgement until all the facts are out there, please.

. .but this time concentrate on what it says. You must have been sending a text when you glanced at it the first time.

this person was probably concentrating on the several reports out there that were not all the same. it IS a good idea to get your info from multiple sources, you know, and in this case, as with many other 'news' reports, the info varied. people pass judgement on things that they know so little about. case in point, your "texting" insult. that doesn't even make sense!!!

For those who wish death on this child of god should be ashame an im not sayin he shouldnt be punished thats gods job not man find the truth in the holy word god bless us all

....for murdering the English language?

ha ha good one!!

I agree that wishing for the death of this child is too harsh a punishment just for stealing, but please keep in mind that this could have turned into something much worse. He could have severely hurt or killed someone during this robbery.

A true child of God wouldn't steal because that's against God's law. He broke both God's and man's law. This is a child of the devil. Pray for him, but don't excuse him.

God gave us laws to live by, and instructed us to live by the laws of the land. Why would God instruct us to follow the laws of the land, and then have no consequences when those laws are broken? This robber broke the law, and he's going to have to pay the price for that.

He was shot because the clerk was white and he was BL...OH WAIT...never mind!....little CRAP got what he deserved!..I hope MORE just like him end up in the same situation!

Keep fighting back against these lowlife criminal pieces of garbage. Too bad he didn't end up in the ground.

Who cares if he dies?

He's an armed robber. If he doesn't die, the clerk needs to be sent back to the range.

Good job

I don't wish this robber to die but I am glad to see a store clerk finally taking matters into their own hands to stop this type of criminal behavior. When a robber puts a gun in a clerk's face he's asking for what ever he gets.

Good

I hope it hurts and that he is left with a life long injury for his cowardly criminal act.

Ha Ha Ha, on him. Now he's gonna have a hospital bill, in the thousands. Serves him right. Hopefully it will set him back, several years.

Wait a minute. These gang-banging, thugs, never pay a penny for all the medical costs they create. Who's gonna pay the $20,000 it costs to stich up this thug, and put him back on the block ? Me and you, thats who.

So what exactly is your point? Other are tired of criminals and you wanted to post what some of us had put up?

He just MIGHT ? think twice before trying something like that again.

Another example of why the government should not infringe upon our right to bear arms.

Hey Judge Blackmore here is one that you can and should put under the jail. Shame Shame Shame.

Too bad the clerk didn't finish the job and save the taxpayers the funds of a trial, public defender and room and board at the establishment he will hopefully be going to for many years.

...by qualifying for our concealed carry permits, those criminals had BEST realize that a lot of us will shoot back now! The best part is, we're a lot smarter than they are!

You've got to be kidding me. when are the criminals going to realize that people are NOT afraid of guns anymore. Especially store clerks.

I for one will blow any SOB off the face of the earth if they attempt to rob, harm or enter my happy home.

I learned about women not being fearful of guns from my dad and brothers who hunt and who taught me at age 13 what the boys learn about guns.
I learned of our right and obligation to defend ourselves by listening to G. Gordon Liddy on the radio, then by taking the process into my own hands after learning every single possible thing I could learn about firearms, practicing at the range, and practicing at the range, and by practicing at the range.

Be Prepared Households of America!

First all of, I am glad no one got seriously hurt in what could have been a very bad situation. There will be those who say they he didn't deserve to be shot. Yes he did. When he chose to walk into that store with a weapon, he gave up his right to expect to walk out of there unscathed. The father did what he had to do to protect his child and any parent would have done the same thing.

Don't do the crime unless you are prepared for severe consequences. This ought to happen to more of these robbers and theives! Save the court some money as you don't have to waste money on a trial if they don't make it to court.
