WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For most children, it’s normal to play outside and go to school, but some live their lives inside the walls of a hospital room.

That was the case for Zackary Mayo, a little boy who lost his fight with cancer back in May. Now, friends and classmates are honoring his life by encouraging others battling sickness.

A family friend of the Mayos wanted to bring some normalcy to Zack’s life in the hospital, so she made him an eZtee, a cooler version of your standard hospital gown.

“We wanted Zack to feel normal, and other kids are going through what Zack went through. We just want them to feel normal and happy and have hope too,” said Jordan Pipkin, creator of eZtees.

Pipkin was Zack’s neighbor and friend who simply cut a cool T-shirt into a gown to bring a piece of home to the hospital.

“It’s very difficult to watch your child hurt and be sick, and when somebody brings a smile to your child’s face, that little bit of joy in your day can make all the difference in the world,” Zack’s mom Wendy said.

The eZtees are helping to spread Zack’s happiness and hope to other kids.

J.C. Delavore had to spend a night at New Hanover Regional Medical Center because of a serious virus. Like J.C., many other children will receive eZtees thanks to Pipkin and the students at Zack’s old school Parsley Elementary, who tie-dyed hundreds of T-shirts.

“For the kids there, it really helps them to understand and appreciate how wonderful it is to be healthy but to empathize with other children who are struggling and other families,” Wendy Mayo said.

“Thankfully he was only here one day,” J.C.’s dad Chris said. “But for kids who are here for longer, I’m sure it brings a lot of joy to them.”

Pipkin and her family plan to continue passing out the eZtees at New Hanover Regional.

The shirts were not the only gifts delivered today. Each one came with a handwritten note from a student at Parsley Elementary.

Parsley also created those t-shirts in honor and memory of Sergio, a student who passed away in March 2011. He was a 4th grader in the Specially Designed Academics (SDA) classroom at Parsley Elementary. His memory is equally as important and need not be forgotten.
