LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A state review found dozens of training deficiencies within the Leland Police Department. The review conducted in September found 89 deficiencies in all, but Leland Police Chief Tim Jayne says most have been corrected.
In a news release Jayne said, “85 have been corrected either by transcripts from Brunswick Community College as well as other community colleges, or officer owned certificates or make up classes taught by state certified instructors.” Jayne says the problems date back to 2005.
The North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission, the state regulators for law enforcement agencies and officers, says a September visit by one of its inspectors was a regularly scheduled audit, which turned up the issues. Training and Standards says the audit had nothing to do with a harassment claim the Town of Leland settled with former officer Sherry Lewis just days earlier.
At the time of the visit, WWAY request a copy of the results of the inspection. This evening, the North Carolina Department of Justice sent WWAY a heavily redacted copy of the audit that sheds little light on what the inspector found, other than the fact that records for each of the department’s 31 officers, including Jayne, had a deficiency for “Commission Documentation,” “Mandatory In-Service Training” or both.
The report says the department has until Dec. 1 to fix the problems.
