WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The centerpiece of the Wilmington City Council meeting Tuesday was the sign ordinance that has downtown business owners downright mad.

The rules are not new. The sign ordinance has been in effect since 2008, but it was only this past August that enforcement started to pressure storefronts in the Central Business District to comply with the requirements.

After a heated meeting last week, council staff researched other cities and found that ours is pretty restrictive.

John Sharkey owns a business downtown and feels the city is doing a good job of considering local business input.

“I think tonight’s action is pretty good, because it allows more time for the staff to come up with other options, and hopefully all the store owners will be happy and the ones that want to put up a lot of signs and cover 99 percent of their store windows might have a chance and those that fell like only 10 percent those might have a chance,” Sharkey said.

City Council has directed staff to seek further input and resolve questions defining coverage, the definition of signs and areas other than downtown.

Staff will make a presentation to City Council at the next meeting on November 15.

Then it will be to late their pushing this off till after the election for a reason. You will await their will and pleasure and you will have no say. When elected mayor, this is one of the first things that will be on the not so common sense chopping block!

I would not hold my breath if I was you. You could not even get more votes than Ricky Meeks last time and he did not put out 1 sign.
