RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s journey toward new district boundaries for the Legislature and Congress is about to detour into court, even though federal attorneys just announced they won’t oppose the maps on certain racial discrimination grounds.

An attorney representing civil rights, election reform and union groups said Wednesday she expects to file a lawsuit challenging the boundaries on Friday in Raleigh.

Anita Earls with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice said they will challenge the boundaries in state court.

Opponents of the maps approved by the Republican-led Legislature in July argue the proposals failed to comply with the US Voting Rights Act. Others have questioned the number of voting precincts split between two or more districts.

The US Justice Department said Tuesday night it wouldn’t object right now to the maps.
