WILMINGTON, NC (GREATER WILMINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL) — Never mind our high credit scores, miles of sandy white beaches and high ranking as a business and outdoor destination; according to one recent survey Wilmington is just plain broke.

The Daily Beast, a news and opinion website backed by Newsweek magazine, recently ranked Wilmington No. 17 on its list of “America’s Brokest Cities.”

Citing an unemployment rate of 10.5 percent, median household income of $44,825, average personal debt of $24,716, and an average credit score of 745, Wilmington fares slightly better than Detroit — ranked No. 18.
