Brunswick Co. fire victim died from smoke

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — An autopsy shows a man killed in a Sunday fire in Brunswick County died of smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded to the home at 8060 Rachel Wynd in the Carol-Lynn subdivision off US 17 near Leland around 7:40 p.m. Sunday. A neighbor said there may be a man and dogs inside. Firefighters say the house was engulfed in flames when they got there. It took them about 45 minutes to bring under control.

During their search, crews found Garrett Winkler Jr., 51, dead inside.

Investigators say the fire began in the living room, but they are not sure of the exact cause. They do believe it was accidental. Foul play is not suspected.

The victim’s pets were not injured in the fire and are being cared for by Brunswick County Animal Services.
