WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — The Laney boys soccer team just finished their most successful season in the history of the school. The Buccaneers made it all the way to the Eastern 4-A semi-finals, but Laney lost this past Saturday to Pinecrest. That defeat ended the Bucs season at 17-3 under head coach Dave Karlson. As it turns out, it’s the final season for Karlson at Laney.
After 12 years as the Buccaneers head coach Dave Karlson has decided to retire. He wants to be able to spend more time with his family, but the coach knows Laney soccer will always be very close to his heart. “It’s time for me to go,” Karlson told WWAY shortly after the Bucs lost to Pinecrest on Saturday. “I absolutely love being around the kids. They’re wonderful student athletes because I preach the academic side of it first and the boys have proven that to me. I’m walking away and I will certainly miss it.”
Karlson asked WWAY to not release the information about his retirement until this time, even though he talked to us about it on Saturday. He wanted to be able to share his retirment with players, parents and send multiple emails to the Laney family first.
