RALEIGH, NC (AP) — State officials hope October is the month where North Carolina’s unemployment rate reverses a trend.

Tuesday’s announcement comes as the jobless rate has gone up for five straight months, rising to 10.5 percent in September.

North Carolina had more jobs in September, but the rate rose by one tenth of one percentage point because more people were looking for work.

The state announced in September that jobs in the government sector are down nearly 19,000 from last year, a loss that state officials attributed largely to layoffs of teachers and teaching assistants.

North Carolina’s unemployment rate continued to be much higher than the national rate of 9.1 percent.
