WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A local church held a free Thanksgiving lunch for anyone who attended the 11:30 a.m. service and to any less fortunate folks that couldn’t have a Thanksgiving meal.

The St. Luke Amez Church shared its turkey and side dishes with anyone who came to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with them.

The church reaches out to the community as much as it can to encourage peace and happiness this holiday season.

“We’re sharing things with people who don’t have homes to share a meal in it’s our way of saying thank you to God and to the community, doing what God has called us to do,” Pastor William Johnson said.

St. Luke also gives free meals every Wednesday called the “Hump Day Hookup” in its fellowship hall and the event is open to everyone.

Again, we agree 2012. (Wow, this is getting kinda scary!)

There was a time, about 20 years ago, when I was laid off from my job and had to draw food stamps (and unemployment) until I could find another one. It took about 4 months, but I was able to find a really good job and have been employed there ever since. I’ll never forget how those food stamps kept me and my son from going hungry. I was so grateful for them.

Food stamps are meant to be a hand up, not a hand out. They’re meant to be a temporary, not a permanent, fix. If they’re used for the purpose for which they were intended, they’re a very good thing. But far too many abuse the system and continue relying on taxpayers to support them their whole lives. There’s GOT to be a better way.

You are indeed doing God’s work, during these extremely harsh economic times, and I assure you that our areas homeless individuals appreciate it. Thanksgiving and Christmas are times of intense reflection for these folks. Helping to remove the anxiety the poor often experience with securing a meal enables them to concentrate on making their lot in life better.
The generosity of ” giving-up” YOUR family time to ‘serve’ them instead resonnates strongly with most, many of whom will be experiencing hardships for the first time ever.

There, but for the Grace of God, go I.

We are all only one Obama election away from utter destitution. The ‘homeless’ whom you served today are unable to sustain because they are dependent on that Socialist government check, that keeps them enslaved. If only the government would QUIT handing out “stipends” to fool some lowly educated people into believing that it comes FREE.

Those SSI checks are the MOST abused by those who decided not to work….long before unemployment reached 10%, which constitutes fraud, blatent corruption, and taxpayer waste.
I am all for drug checks First, instead of SSI checks First.

Meantime, keep up the good work~

Of course, I am not talking about those folks who are genuinely
disabled & unable to work. I am talking about….freeloaders,
smoking the crack, thanks to our “generosity.“ Are we insane?

Many people look at all the government programs as a way of life with generation after generation breeding professional sponges. Now we even provide them with free cell phones. I can’t wait until they think a vehicle is a right and demand we provide them with one.
