WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The day after Thanksgiving is considered one of the busiest shopping days of the year. A lot of bargain hunters in Wilmington lined up hours in advance to stand in line for stores that open once the clock strikes midnight or even Thursday night for Black Friday.

Americans love bargains and Wilmington residents certainly know a good deal when they see it, but sometimes that requires standing in line for hours. Tammy Mitchell got to the Wilmington Target at noon on Thursday. She was first in line by a two-hour margin.

"I've never been first in line for anything before," Mitchell said. "I wanted to be first this year, because I lost out last year."

The line was even longer at the Wilmington Best Buy on Thanksgiving night. Tracy Johnson was first in line.

"I got in line around 8:30 on Wednesday night," Johnson said. "It's going to be worth it, though, because we're going to get a 42-inch television for $199."

Customers in line at Best Buy were treated to a free "Harry Potter" movie in the parking lot Thursday night as well.

As critical as I have been of Leland PD lately I have to say

The officers on duty last night earned their pay and then some. Not once, nor twice or even 3 times.. Leland PD was called to Walmart on New Pointe Blvd 6 times!!! (I have to ask the question why there wasnt LEO presence there from the begining as there was in Wilmington at several early store openings (WPD had at least 3-4 officers at Walmart on Sigmon RD which still had a major incident requiring EMS at around midnight and Both NHCSO and WPD were at Best Buy on College keeping things under control.. Ive been a very vocal dissenter on the actions of the Leland PD I know as of late and rightfully so but I feel obligated to thank the poor night shift officers who had to deal with what amounted to insanity run amok with people fighting over trivial things like towels of all things really??? (My wife and I were in Walmart in Leland around 3am to actually pick up a couple legit home needs like milk and few other items and look for a couple things she hadnt been able to find in the chaos at our stop in Wilmington (We'd eaten dinner in town and gone to the movies our first chance in a month due to surgery Id had done). Anyway the store was pretty empty and many of the items that went on sale at 10pm and midnight were still in stock at 3am (including the rare discounted Blue WII for $99 which most Walmarts I suspect sold out in mere minutes.. BUt I digress, Leland PD put up with very thankless behavior from several individuals but from all accounts the overnight officers did their job well and did what needed to be done and without besmerching the name of a department that has been through alot lately (Ive been told by a couple anonymous sources the night officers in fact as a rule (except for maybe 1 or 2 bad apples) are the good ones in the department and work nights simple because they dont have to deal with all the hang wringing and unprofessionalism that seems to permeate the LPD during daylight hours when Chief Jayne is on his throne.

OK

Maybe I'm from another planet, but I've never understood this. There is absolutely nothing I would get up at 4am for, absolutely nothing I would fight over like a selfish child, and absolutely nothing that I feel I have to have just to keep up with the neighbors. Honestly, sometimes I think the world's gone mad.

But then I was raised in the good old days when life was simple, people were polite, and the Christmas spirit was everywhere all year round. Sorry to say, I think those days are gone forever.

It is truly sad that poeple

It is truly sad that poeple cannot even shop without the necessity of police presence. Have we become so animal-like that this is necessary? They couldn't pay me enough to get into that mess and deal with the likes of them. Any shopping I do will be on my computer, tax free and free shipping.

Corporate greed breeds insanity

These people have been brainwashed by corporate advertising that they MUST have every stupid gadget or gizmo if they want to be happy. McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. exist at the expense of every small locally-owned restaurant, hardware store, clothing shop that cannot compete with their cheap, Chinese-made crap.

As long as Americans go insane on "Black Friday", the corporations will keep pumping up the volume and we lose more and more of our independent culture/spirit every season.

Merry Giftmas and Happy New Gear, everyone. Now keep BUYING!!!

Did

You even read what you wrote? Corporate greed breeds insanity; thats the funniest thing i have read all year. People obviously want these products, no one forces anyone to buy anything. Most people go for the best value at the best price. If locally owned businesses cannot offer a good product at a fair price, whos fault is that?
I think you are the one who has been brainwashed.
