WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — To kick off the holiday season, downtown on-street parking was free both on Thanksgiving day and Friday.

Parking downtown can be a hassle with the crowds and meter parking, but for two days visitors got to come down free of charge. Business owners say they hope the incentive will bring Black Friday shoppers downtown and spend money at their stores.

“The stores downtown are so unique,” said Michael Lambrix, owner of Candles Etc. “They have different items than you’re going to find at the big corporate stores in the mall. I think once people have that little bit of incentive such as the free parking a lot more people will come down. Downtown is a great place and we have some great things down here.”

City parking decks were also free of charge Thanksgiving day.
