WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The NC Highway Patrol is still looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck and seriously injured 22-year-old Joseph Earl Jones, Jr. on the southbound side of Carolina Beach Road late Thursday night.

Trooper Phillips says Jones was hit sometime between 11:16 and 11:54 p.m. Thursday while crossing Carolina Beach Road near Monkey Junction Storage. He was wearing a royal blue long sleeve pullover.

Jones is currently in critical condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Jones' mother, Tammy, says he had driven from Leland to visit his girlfriend and was walking back to her house from Wal-Mart when he was hit.

He has several broken bones, suffered internal bleeding, a collapsed lung and needs multiple surgeries.

“It's a wakeup call to see my son when I just saw him hours earlier and to see him unrecognizable,” said Joseph Jones Sr.

Joseph has a son of his own, two year-old Jessiah. Tammy is afraid he may not see his father again. She doesn't understand how someone could just drive away.

“If you can stand there and look at my son and have no mercy, I just want to know what kind of person you are,” she said.

Both parents say they hope whoever hit their son will turn themselves in.

“Come forward,” Tammy Jones said. “Come forward and take responsibility for what you have done.”

Joseph is scheduled to have surgery Monday morning for his fractured pelvis.

Highway Patrol is looking for a 1995 Chevrolet pickup, Tahoe or Suburban with damage to the front right side. They hope that with so many shoppers out that someone saw something.

Anyone with information is urged to call Trooper Phillips at (910) 392-3918 or (800) 334-7411.

Prayers for the victim & his loved ones

I would love to speak how I really feel, but I dont think WWAYTV3 would approve. That being said, whatever person is blaming the victim for the accident really needs some praying for. It comes down to CLOTHES?...thats the ONLY defense for why he was hit?? From now on, anyone who goes on a walk when the street lights come on...MAKE SURE YOU WEAR BRIIIGHT COLORS!! (Smell my sarcasim) Its Soooo obvious that the person who hit the victim is guilty in SOME way. Anybody with a right mind would stop! WHY DIDNT they stop?? Have a lot more to say but cant express it here. Prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

Common Sense

Firstly, I am in no way defending the driver... If you hit anything stop your car, and make sure it is okay, and that goes for dogs, deer, cats, and most importantly Humans.... I hope this person is found or surrenders...

Secondly, the article above reads the young man was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt. It is hard to see people "Jaywalking" in dark clothing near midnight. Also, a lot of young people like to cross the street and walk and expect drivers to slow down and wait for them to cross... Pedestrians have the right of way, but people crossing streets should look both ways, and make sure if they decide to cross they have enough time to cross before traffic "Hits" them!! Even if the driver stopped the young man would still be in the hospital... I know that section of Carolina Beach road, and there are no cross walks...

I hope the young man heals, and the driver found... May this lesson be learned that you can't always depend on drivers to slow down or stop... make sure you have ample time to cross, and look in both directions...

WOW!!!

This is a very sad incident, I would like to say to the people who post negative things on the site, WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE ANYONE!!! Think before you post, it maybe this family today and your family tomorrow or the next hour. My prayers are with the family.

Hit and Run

It AMAZES me that people go walking at night in dark clothing!!! WHY?? It's night time and it's dark!! Get real people, wear something lite colored or reflected tape!! I am on the streets alot after dark and I can not understand it!! If you wear dark. you CAN'T be seen. Bet if they followed this advice, there would less of these accidents!!

Heartless, Ignorant, Insensative etc etc etc...

Well I may come off rude to some, but there is absolutely no reason for a man to be ran over by a car & LEFT TO DIE. He is a father, son & I'm sure friends to many. If anyone in their RIGHT mind was driving & hit something to do THAT much damage, there would be no reason NOT TO STOP. Whoever said he was probably up to no good or should have been wearing a highlighted jacket is an idiot. I dont know how most people drive but I look at the road when Im driving & have two jeadlights that work perfectly fine. The victim was WALKING...the driver was doing what??...drinking, speeding, texting? Come on people....no morals or regard for human life.

how dare you

No matter what you are wearing you don't just hit somebody and leave them there I can't believe some of you are making it to be his fault how dare you!!!!!!

Amazed....

It sounds like you are easy to amaze. I am sure you are on the streets alot after dark, what corner do you work? Thanks for all the advise. We all love a negative busy body.

Low Blow

There's no excuse for being rude and mean to people who are simply voicing their opinion. If you don't agree, fine. Help them understand why you don't. But to rip them to shreds and degrade them for no reason is uncalled for.

Lots of excuses...

There's lots of excuses for being rude and mean to ignorant people voicing their stupid opinion. A man was struck by a motor vehicle, the driver then fled. At this time the color of his clothing really is of no concern. I was simply voicing my opinion to someone I think was being rude and mean. Remind me tomorrow and I will pretend to care what you think.

hit and run

We have seen the news of the last few days that a lot of violence erupted during black Friday sales. Shoppers were stepping over a man dying on the floor at one Target. Greed abounds in America. Wouldn't surprise me if the idiot that hit this young man was racing to get to another SALE and couldn't be bothered to stop.

Hope the driver is caught soon and this young man recovers.

driver come fwd.

now you know that boy was up to no good walking down that road at night. probably looking for something to steal.

How can you say that about

How can you say that about somebody that you dont even know? I know his family and I know for sure that he dont have to steal from anyone. They said he was walking from walmart( for what reason only God and him know why,) I dont recall anybody saying they saw him on their property stealing.I see alot of people at night are they all looking to rob somebody? If you cant say an encouraging word, then dont say anything at all.

You are.....

You are an a%&.

Hit & Run

TO THE PERSON THAT HIT THIS YOUNG MAN

You may not come forward and take responsibility for your actions and you may never het caught but what ever you do, don't think you got away with it because GOD knows what you have done and HE will see you to pass Judgement on you when Judgement Day comes for you.

Whoever hit this person was

Whoever hit this person was more than likely someone under the influence of alcohol/drugs or driving under suspension and for that reason was afraid to stop and help because they knew they would be in big trouble.

And now made it worse

And by running they have only made things worse for themselves. Remember the stupid girl that hit the man crossing College Rd a few months back? She tried to hide her car at a body shop up in Sampson County and it was found.

hit & run.....

Why is it people aren't required to have morals until they hit someone in an accident, and leave the scene? Who is out shopping at 11:15-11:45? This all sounds like the woman in Creekwood, who moved from New York City, to keep her children away from the gangs, only to have her son killed on his front porch, of course it was 3:00am, and noone has explained why a 13 year old was doing outside at 3:00am! I hope they find the person that did this, but I just can't feel sorry for someone out walking the streets that late at night!

Insensitive Lowlife

Well to start, your an insensitive low life for even commenting on this article the way you did. what if YOU were walking and got hit and left to die. well.. i for one wouldn't have any sympathy.. because.. "WHY WAS THIS PERSON WALKING IN THE STREET AT 11AM??" or maybe it could have been your son or daughter walking that late because they had no other way of transportation.. how would you feel ? it's people like you that make me wonder why .. why we even have people like you in this world. your insenstive and karma will come back to bite you in the A$$.

Guest1966 - I hate to be

Guest1966 - I hate to be rude, but you are an a@@! When you posted your comment, you did not know anything about the boy. And yes, 22 is an adult, but still a boy to me. What if he had car problems? Or maybe just got off work? There is a HUGE difference between being 22 and out past 11pm and 13 and outside at 3am. If I remember correctly midnight was not very late when I was 22. But, you sir/ma'am are rude. You don't know why he was walking, but he is seriously hurt. Instead of being self righteous, try being a little sympathetic or heaven forbid empathetic. Thousands were shopping sales that night, that doesn't make us lack morals; maybe common sense, but definately not morals.

Some folks will always blame the victim... Gotta love it.

Who cares why he was out shopping at 1130pm? He has that right. Just like the hit and run involving the college student earlier this year, you always have those that will blame the victim. Only a piece of poop of a person drives off leaving a human being on the side of the road.

It was the Night of Black Friday

It was the night of Blakc Friday just before midnight. There was thousands of people out on the streets going to Walmart and other stores. Someone saw something!

Why would you even write

Why would you even write something like this? He is in the hospital seriously injured.... not because he was out shopping late at night on black friday like thousands of people in Wilmington were but because he was walking home....and someone hit him and left him there. YOU don't know where he was coming from....or what type of lifestyle he lives. You don't have to feel sorry for him but was it really neccesary for you to comment?

really?

perhaps this young man has a job where he works nights. what do you know? how can you compare a 22-year old man walking in a dimly lit suburban area of town at 11pm to a 13-year old out at 3am in creekwood?

Out too late?

He's 22 years old. I really don't think that 11:15-11:45pm is that late to be out for an adult. It's not like he's underaged.

I can remember at 21 years old being out until 1:00 or 2:00am when I was looking for my soul mate. I stayed out of trouble, but I danced half the night away and had fun. This guy was near Carolina Beach, and that's a fun place to hang out if you're young and looking.

Apparently, he was just walking on the side of the road. Instead of blaming the victim, you should blame the gutless person who hit him and left him to die on the side of the road. They didn't have the guts to stop and own up to what they did. Shame on them for having so little regard for a human life.

I hope they have a miserable Christmas, and that they have to keep looking over their shoulder wondering when they will be caught.

THE TV SAYS THIS MAN WAS

THE TV SAYS THIS MAN WAS CLOSE TO WALMART ON CAROLINA BEACH ROAD. THATS ABOUT 10-15 MILES FROM CAROLINA BEACH.3L4WH

You have a valid point, but

You have a valid point, but anyone should be able to walk or ride the streets safely at any hour. As for the hit and run, I have heard no deatils about whether or not the pedestrian was in the right or wrong. I did read he had on a dark jacket. This in itself goes against what we know about walking at night. This day and time, when someone is injured, even if it was entirely their fault, they will still sue the other person, sometimes. Maybe this is what the driver felt when it happened. Don't know. Hope the guy is OK.

Cackling Hen...

Don't be such a busy body. It's none of your buisness why a 13 year old was on HIS OWN front porch at three am. Maybe he couldn't sleep and was getting some air. No one asked you to feel sorry for anyone. We are just asking you to shut up and mind your own buisness. Last time I checked it is still America and people have the right to walk around at 11:45. Maybe that is a bit late for a cackling hen, but you should get out and try it sometimes.

maybe he just got off work

maybe he just got off work and was walking home? Hope he recovers.

Come forward

If you are reading this and you are the one who did this, come forward and turn yourself in. You hit a human being and you know you did so be the person you should be and step forward. Someone knows who you are and hopefully it will be a matter of time before that catch you.
