WILMINGTON, NC (AP) — A federal judge is putting a temporary halt to North Carolina’s plans to allow people to purchase anti-abortion license plates.

US District Judge James Fox on Monday issued an oral order blocking the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles from issuing the license plates, which say “Choose Life.”

The case will go forward in federal court with both sides presenting evidence and seeking a final judgment.

The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is suing to block the plates from being issued, saying they violate the First Amendment because state legislators blocked a corresponding specialty plate for supporters of abortion rights.

Twenty-nine states either already make “Choose Life” plates available or have approved such plates but have not manufactured them.

The state allows just about anything on license plates, but this judge won’t allow people to select “choose life” plates if they want them? Wonder if he would allow “choose death”?

Hey, Robo.. you’re one of those mindless republicans that vote your party regardless of who the candidate is, aren’t you?

You should go back and read the article. The state already rejected ‘choose choice’ plates, therefore it’s only fair that the ‘choose life’ plates be rejected as well.

Save the Turtles plate is hardly the same thing now is it? Get a bumper sticker if you want to advertise your stance on abortion… I like having people to chuckle at as I drive around town.

I agree with the ruling. If you are going to allow “Choose Life” plates, you have to also allow “Choose Choice” plates. Personally, i think it’s silly to put either on license plates. First, it will change no ones minds, and second, a public display like this is not the place for such hot button issues.

Yea you nailed it. Both are inappropriate. Carrying your opinions around on the bumper of your car is useless and low class. The State should not be involved in that behavior.
