WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Christmas is just around the corner, and many folks around the Cape Fear are busting out big bows, stringing sparkling lights and Christmas caroling all over town.

Some of the most beautiful and historic homes, churches and businesses decadently decorated and opened their doors to the public this weekend for the Old Wilmington by Candlelight tour.

The Burns-Huggins home had a special treat for guests: United Daughters of the Confederacy as docents and Sons of Confederate Veterans acting out Civil War scenes.

“One of the old time hymns that they sung in the Civil War was ‘I heard the bells on Christmas Day; their old familiar carols play,’” Burns-Huggins homeowner Suzanne Stanley said. β€œIt’s documented that when the North was on one side of, say, a little stream, and the Southern troops were on the other, that they put down their weapons of war on Christmas Eve, and they sang.”

The tour has been a Christmas tradition since 1973.
