Brunswick County school employees to receive bonus

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The holiday season just got a little bit merrier for employees of the Brunswick County school system. The board of education voted Tuesday to give all eligible employees a one-time bonus.

All employees who are eligible for retirement and health benefits who were employed with the county before September 1st of this year will receive a $1,000 bonus. Permanent part-time employees will get $500, and eligible employees who started after September 1st will see $250 added to their paychecks. The bonuses will go out on the December 20th payroll.

The money comes from the school system’s reserve account, which has seen an increase in revenue due to sales tax refunds, fines, and federal reimbursements.

    Kudos to the Brunswick County BOE. The bonuses will be very helpful to many of the employees, I am sure.

    Kudos to the Board also for not being greedy and grabbing pieces of the pie for themselves. Too bad the clueless county commissioners couldn’t master the same ethical fortitude.

    All we have heard is that the schools are hurting for money. Seems like that is not the case after all.

    Good for those employees of the Brunswick County School System. It is about time someone set an example of how to take care of your people who stay dedicated to the system and are most certainly forgotten about. The pay is not close to the private sector and benefits have eroded over passed few years. The private sector thinks school employees make the money when that is far from the truth. They pay to upgrade their insurance ie; dental, disability, cancer, life, and lets not forget they a portion goes into the retirement system. Then take you state and federal taxes. Oh yea they are really raking it in.

    Maybe if other counties would look after their people and teachers it would show they care about them more than their $180,000 plus a year salary and contracts and benefits. Maybe school systems would step up and give our children the education they need instead of what else can employees do without.

    They have a surplus…because they’ve made such insightful decisions, such as screwing with the bus schedules. Now…although most parents don’t like the way the schedule is, it will cost $1 million to go fix?…really? They had $1.8 million in surplus to use for bonuses, and will lose a million to undo the mess THEY caused?? Fire Pruden, the Board of Education, and use that money as a bonus to the techers.
