CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s board of trustees have met to discuss “a personnel matter” after Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora accepted an offer to become the Tar Heels’ next football coach.

Trustees met for about an hour in closed session Thursday morning. The board is scheduled to take action when it meets again Friday.

Any deal to hire Fedora would be subject to approval by the trustees, meaning North Carolina couldn’t hold a news conference to introduce him until Friday at the earliest. In addition, the board of governors for the 16-campus UNC system must approve certain provisions of a deal when it meets Thursday afternoon.

The Tar Heels were looking for a permanent replacement for Butch Davis, who was fired amid an NCAA investigation within the program.
