WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the second year in a row dead pelicans are turning up on the North Carolina coast, including North Topsail Beach.

Last year hundreds of the birds turned up dead with curious injuries that may have been from human hands. No one’s sure about the cause of this most recent string of pelican deaths, but the state Wildlife Federation is offering a $5,000 reward for information that could lead directly to an arrest. The Pender Watch and Conservancy is also adding $700 to the pot.

Anyone caught harming pelicans faces prosecution.
