WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wondering why you or a coworker was late to work this morning? Blame an accident on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

A pick-up truck overturned in the inside lane coming in from Brunswick County. Crews had to close the bridge for a while after 8 a.m. to flip the truck back over and clear the scene.

The driver of the truck was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. No word on his injuries. The driver’s mother tells WWAY the brakes on the truck gave out, and he ran up on the guard rail and flipped over.

Wilmington has been poorly planned over the years. It’s going to be horrible driving through downtown over the next year, with wrecks occuring daily on the bridge and the work on 3rd St. At some point this town is going to have to look at building multiple bridges to relieve some of the traffic congestion. It’s going to be great when the I40 Bypass is finished so people won’t even need to come through Wilmington to go through Myrtle Beach. On a added note it would be good to see Wilmington go back to 1990 population levels of about 56,000 people. It was alot more pleasant community back then, still no jobs or opportunity though.

  • even your mom doesn’t believe you

    The brakes locked up, really?
You’re absolutely sure you weren’t distracted by the use of a cell phone, car radio, or eating / lighting up?
    I mean, really…

my mother did not say my breaks gave out! might have said lockled up but not this. thanks

Get off his back. He didn’t say exactly what happened. He said what his mother may have said. Chill it. There’s no reason to get an attitude. And yes, REALLY.

My guess is texting, cell phone talking, or some other distraction that caused him to not pay attention to where he was going. Doubt the brakes were at fault. Don’t really think brakes would cause him to climb the guard rail.

  • Aunt of the driver

What makes have any reason to doubt this young man? Is this because of his age, you think he is not responibile? You know nothing of him and I know him personally and for you to assume he was doing of the things you have listed just shows how little you know. I know for a fact he don’t light up anything!!!! So in closing Mr./Mrs./ Ms. Perfect driver, my suggestion to you is to get you a Hover Craft so you can avoid all traffic and the job of having to judge people’s driving habits!!!!!

no one cares keep ur smartass comments to urself please. ur opinion no one cares about

  • Aunt of driver

Unless you was in the truck with the driver you should not be guessing anything. You have no clue what happened other than what you have seen or heard. I am guess you are a lonely person who has nothing better to do than guess about something you shouldn’t be guessing about. Wether it was the brakes or anything else, you should be like most decent people are and try being thankful no one including yourself was hurt and the driver is safe. For all that was late for appointments and work, I can promise that was not the intent of the driver to make anyone late for work or an appointment. Lets not forget it was an accident and it could have been anyone of us..

  • really…

actually, the people who were inconvenienced
    by you probably wish the truck would have flipped the other way;
at least traffic would be uninterrupted

  • friend of Driver

You sound like someone who has entirely too high an opinion of yourself and seem to think you are the most important person on the road. So please- excuse anyone else driving in Wilmington who may cross your path. I agree with the aunt of the driver, you need another means of transportation so that you won’t be inconvienced by others! Or just move to Alaska-its wide open probably very little traffic in the towns, you can ride snow-mobiles AND you will be gone from here!

Ppl seem to forget the meaning of an accident! It happens and happened for a reason and instead of trying to call the driver out on what caused the accident, if he was distracted or not….shouldn’t we be saying that “yes, it really stinks that traffic was backed up, and ppl were probably late to work, but we are so glad that no one was hurt or lives lost”!!! How many times have all of us been eating, on our cellphones or changing the radio in our vehicles and by the grace of God never been in an accident. But no, we want to make accusations about someone we don’t know who was in an ACCIDENT, and made us late to work. I’m just thankful that no one was critically injured or someones family member or members didn’t loose their lives today!!!!!

“Wondering why you or a coworker was late to work this morning?” Should that read… Wondering why you or a coworker WERE late to work this morning??

  • Guest 1992

No, Because in English you look to the noun closest to the verb and since Coworker is singular Was is used because Was is used for singular nouns / pronouns. Take basic English, and stop showing your ignorance

Lets grade your comment and see who is ignorant.
