SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Police in Southport are looking for a man who robbed a bank this afternoon. Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove says it happened about 1:55 p.m. at the First Citizens Bank at Howe and W. West Streets.

Dove says a man witnesses say was six feet tall walked in wearing a hoodie, mask, gloves and blue jeans. Dove says the man handed a teller a note that said, “Give me all your money. No one will get hurt. I have a gun.”

After getting money, the man ran out of the bank down W. West Street toward Lord Street. Dove says a citizens followed the man in his car before losing the suspect behind some homes.

Investigators are using a dog and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office helicopter to search for the suspect. Chief Dove says there is a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

  • Thereisnonews says:

They don’t do that anymore because they’re so afraid of offending someone. Political correctness is killing this country. When you hear in the news stories about flash mobs and unruly teens…you know EXACTLY who they’re talking about.

  • Me says:

Maybe they couldn’t see his skin to identify a race. Sounds like he was covered head to toe.

  • guesty says:

What race was this robber? White, black, Hispanic, Asian? Don’t you think that key bit of information if available should be given out?

  • WhoTookMyName says:

The perpetrator was wearing a hoodie, mask and gloves and presumably shoes and socks in this somewhat cold weather. Possibly the race of this person couldn’t be reliably determined.

Also FYI WWAY, I have been using the “Guest99x” name for years now. After completing this post and previewing, an error came up saying the name “Guest99x” belongs to a registered user…

  • Bill says:

Um, Can you not look at the picture and see his nose and around his eyes. He is black. I just wish they would state that. He is only wearing a bandana, not a full face mask.

  • kp says:

Starnews reported he was a black man around 6 ft tall. Although I could see how they may have not known.

  • GuestUsed2B99x says:

From the Wiki on Flash Mobs:

“On 27 Nov 2011, at Mumbai CST, nearly 200 dancers took commuters by surprise, when they broke into dance accompanied by the title track from Bollywood hit ‘Rang de Basanti’. It was the first ever Flash mob performed in India.”

One of the most idiotic examples of PC is right on our driver’s licenses where instead of a description of race, there is a miniature of our photo.

  • burgerboy says:

yeah, that’s true. and when he gets caught, his grandma will be on camera outside the court house saying “him’s a good boy, him’s didn’t do nuffin’s, him’s was just turning his life around”

  • Guest99x says:

Cry me a river. You were not smart enough to register it and now it is mine.

  • GuestUsed2B99x says:

Congratulations, the new 99x…. I am indeed happy for you that you feel important now, that you’ve accomplished this great coup!

  • Guest20 says:

That happened to me too. For a long time I was GuestLee, but someone else registered the name and then I wasn’t able to use it anymore.

Look at the top of the WWAY website home page and you will see where it says “Members: Register or Login”. You can register your new name there and no one else can take it. Apparently, someone has just registered Guest99x, so you won’t be able to use that one. Good luck!

  • GuestLee says:

You are not GuestLee, I am GuestLee and I don’t appreciate you trying to be me.

  • Guest11212121 says:

How did that idiot dressed like that get passed the front door without someone being suspicious and making a phone call. Give me a fricken break!!

  • ConcernedSouthportCitizen says:

Let me just say this! I live in Southport and have lived here for about 12 years. I have met a few of the police officers on the force in this town and a few of them are legit people but for the most part they are incompetent to say the least. For example, about an hour before the robbery occurred, about a few blocks away on Howe Street I drove by 3 police cars and 3 cops standing around just chatting like they don’t have a thing to do. Well, guess what, an hour later and only a few blocks away the First Citizens Bank is robbed. Guess what, just a couple of months ago the same thing. Cops everywhere in the vicinity all over the place just chilling and voila the First Federal Bank is robbed and the suspect is not caught. I have been pulled in this town twice in the past 3 years for speeding 3 miles over the speed limit and robberies are going on and nobody is being caught. The police force in this town is a joke! Take a look at some of these officers too and you will see that they couldn’t possibly chase an assailant for more than 10 yards because they are morbidly obese. What in the hell is going on in this town. Message to the SOUTHPORT POLICE, get off your arse and do your damn job! You are pathetic. Your k-9 units couldn’t track these two suspects, you couldn’t track the suspects, the sheriffs around here couldn’t track them and even the air support came up empty! TWO WORDS, absolutely pathetic! Oh and another thing, a $1000 reward! LMAO, what a joke! This two robberies now folks and these two jokers are probably part of all of the home breakins here in Southport and in Oak Island! Damn, I’m tired of it.

He is a she! And she has a history of doing stupid things for very stupid reasons!! The family needs to not come to her rescue this time and let her feel the consequences of her actions! She doesn’t think and doesn’t worry about how her actions harm others around her. She didn’t come from a bad family, matter of fact they tried everything they could to make sure she had a better life than the one she was born into. She had people who cared and wanted the best for her but again she didn’t care how her actions hurt those same people. Easy money isn’t that easy is it T? Good luck!
