WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Trader Joe’s has submitted plans to build a new 13,000-square-foot store at the corner of South College Road and Oleander Drive, according to the Wilmington StarNews.

Wilmington Planning Director Ron Satterfield says the plans also call for 81 parking spaces.

Whole Foods is refurbishing the old Lowe’s store on Oleander near Independence Mall. It’s expected to open next year.

Good & Bad

While my wife and a few others are ecstatic about a Trader Joes coming to down, she contacted the corporate headquarters a while back to tell them what a poor location this was when this was first rumored.

We avoid that intersection like the plague and plan our travel through that intersection only when we have to. You would think they would see all the failed businesses in and around that location and get an idea of what I’m talking about.

Pro…Trader Joe’s. Con…College & Oleander.

Access might not be as bad as you think. There will be a back entrance on 47th street that ties into Peachtree and Pine Grove.

they must be anxious to get a high profile location… too bad they don’t realize that with the pent up demand, they are going to do well wherever they locate.

Can't believe the location

Familiar as I am with Trader Joe’s and so excited about them coming to Wilmington, I can’t believe they chose that location. That is a “pass through” intersection and is not convenient or conducive to traffic trying to slow down and turn into a parking lot. I’d certainly hope that traffic engineers (oh gosh) are planning something to help……….

Have you ever seen a traffic engineer come up with a good solution to a traffic problem? It took the business and property owners to arrive at a workable solution to the intersection instead of the solution the “traffic engineers” first proposed for widening the intersection on the Oleander side.

Most traffic areas only considered!! That is why the location on Oleander was chosen. This is one of the most traveled routes in Wilmington.

I cant wait for Trader Joes but all the way at college and Oleander , really ? Worst location ever ! I live downtown and there is not a grocery for 15 minutes in a car to get to , Downtown would be the best spot I say , the Northside has a ton of open space and across from PPD who has 4,000 employees !! Come on Trader Joes ! How about it ! I could ride my bike to you , I see the Monkey !!

I am thrilled that Trader Joe’s is finally coming to Wilmington! They have great, fresh items at a wonderful price. As far as the location, it is a busy intersection, but all of Wilmington is busy. This is a central location, has plenty of access and will bring jobs to the area as well as boost the local economy. For those that are complaining about the difficulty to get in and out of the parking lot, look at Toys R Us. It is on the opposite corner and on any given day, they are busy. Location certainly has deterred anyone from shopping there. Thank you Trader Joe’s for selecting Wilmington!!
