DURHAM, NC (AP) — Duke University is defending its investigation of a cancer researcher who resigned after questions were raised about his work.

The Herald-Sun of Durham reported the university wrote the North Carolina Medical Board about its evaluation of the school’s investigation of researcher Anil Potti.

Duke is concerned the medical board considered the school investigation found mostly carelessness and honest errors in Potti’s work. Duke says it found substantial problems with the work.

Potti came under scrutiny in 2010 after questions arose that he had falsely claimed to be a Rhodes Scholar and then about the scientific integrity of his research. He resigned several months later.

The medical board found Potti guilty of “unprofessional conduct.” Potti signed a consent order and agreed not to challenge its findings.
