RALEIGH, NC (AP) — About 80 acres has been donated for the Mountains-to-Sea Trail in North Carolina.

Triangle Greenways Council has set aside 79 acres of wetlands on the east side of the Neuse River in Johnston County for the trail. The state Transportation Department donated the land to the council.

About 500 miles of the planned 1,000-mile trail are complete. Plans call for the hiking trail to stretch from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks.

The newly acquired property will be held for construction of about 80 percent of the trail’s planned path between Clayton and Smithfield. The council will keep the land until a local government can construct and manage both the trail and facilities need for it.
