Wilmington shoppers say they would be sad to see Sears go

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It's quitting time for more than 100 Sears and Kmart stores across the country. Sears Holding announced Tuesday that the company would have to close the stores, fueling speculation about whether Sears, which has a 125-year history, can turn itself around and survive. Folks in Wilmington say they go out of their way to shop at Sears because of its long history.

"I trust Sears," shopper Tracy King said. "I mean, it's been around since ever since I was little."

Despite some customer loyalty, the company has been struggling with falling sales and shabby stores, as rivals like Walmart and Target spruce up their looks and turn into one-stop shopping destinations.

The locations of the closing stores has not been released yet, but some shoppers in the Cape Fear say they're worried. Employees at the Independence Mall Sears say they're not worried about the store closing, but were not allowed to give an official comment on the the situation. They did say, however, that some customers have asked about the store's status. They said they think smaller stores in the country will close first.

Shoppers say regardless of what the company decides, the city should fight to keep the stores open.

"I think Wilmington should keep all of the major brands open," King said. "You just don't have a lot of other places where you can go."

Although Sears Holding said on its website it will post a list of closed stores, so far the company has not posted it. WWAY will keep you updated on the Wilmington stores status as it becomes available.

The only reason to shop at Sears is for the Craftsman tools.

I was shopping for a new air compressor. I went to sears they had one for $169, I went to Harbor Freight and the exact same compressor with the exact same plastic shrouds was $119. I know the HF compressor is junk(terrible reviews)so Sears is trying to sell the exact same cheap junk for $50 more.

I ended up buying a Husky compressor at Home Depot. It lasted until this morning now I have to return it! I give up!

Gentilin air compressor is one of the best air compressor so far. Having multi features and in cheap rates.. Try it once..

Sears is overpriced and will never be able to compete. Kmart is barely a step above the dollar general. The store is nasty and the staff are rude.

It's time to give the CEO his pink slip. He doesn't have the vision needed to keep this great company going. He's dropped the ball. Closing stores is probably more expensive than getting them profitable again, but it's obvious that he doesn't care, and he has no idea how to get that done. He's got his cushy paycheck, why should he worry about actually doing his job and growing the company?

I think that if KMART here actually cared about the appearance of the store and had friendlier staff, then i would start shopping there. The KMART in South Florida is more clean and friendly and thats rare down there!!

I remember back in the 60s Sears had an order store in my hometown of Concord, NC. I placed many orders there and went and picked them up when they arrived. But, over the years, it seems Sears could not or would not compete with other similar stores with prices. If I can buy the same item for less at another retailer, that is where I will go. I replaced a worn out Craftsman ratchet handle a while back. The one they gave me was as bad as the one I returned. I don't buy Craftsman anymore.

If you talk to older folks they will tell you that Sears used to be the premier place to shop with great service back in the day. Somewhere that company took a wrong turn. I personally have not shopped there in a little over ten years after having a bad experience with their tire center. I'd hate to see people's jobs go, but I have little desire to shop at Sears or Kmart.
