MORRISVILLE, NC (AP) — Tolls are now being collected on the first toll road in modern-day North Carolina history.

The state Turnpike Authority opened a 3.5-mile stretch of the Triangle Expressway to traffic last month, but began charging motorists Tuesday.

Drivers won’t have to worry about bottlenecks at tool booths, though – there are none. Instead, tolls will be collected electronically, through wireless transponders in cars. Cameras will snap license plate photos to send bills by mail to drivers who don’t have the devices.

Tolls cost 15 cents a mile for those with transponders and slightly more if the state bills by mail.

The Turnpike Authority reports that more than 9,000 transponders had been sold by the end of last week.
