RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Beverly Perdue’s choices for a panel that will recommend potential appointees for North Carolina judgeships include a sheriff, a former chief justice and a previous U.S. Senate candidate.

Perdue on Wednesday released her picks to the new North Carolina Judicial Nominating Commission. She announced the idea in April as a way to place the most qualified nominees on the bench for Superior Court, the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.

The commission will recommend three names when openings occur. Perdue says she’ll choose one of those three.

Commission members include Cumberland County Sheriff Moose Butler, former Chief Justice Burley Mitchell, former Charlotte mayor and two-time Senate candidate Harvey Gantt. Other members are former U.S. Attorney Janice Cole and Raleigh defense attorney Joe Cheshire.
