RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Democrats and advocacy groups suing over new Republican-drawn maps for legislative and congressional districts say the state’s May 8 primary should be delayed until July 10 while judges decide whether the boundaries are unconstitutional.

The plaintiffs who’ve challenged the redistricting plans have formally filed a motion asking a panel of three judges to prevent the maps from being used this year. The lawsuits allege the boundary lines are illegal because they cross too many county lines and its authors used racial considerations above all else without good reason.

The preliminary injunction motion asks for the two-month primary delay but suggests the court could wait until Aug. 28 while the maps run through the courts.

A hearing on the state’s motion to dismiss the consolidated lawsuits is scheduled Thursday.
