RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A task force is recommending that people who were sterilized against their will under an old North Carolina state program be paid $50,000 each in compensation.

About half a dozen states have apologized for similar 20th century practices, called eugenics. But North Carolina is the first to move toward paying damages to the surviving victims.

The Legislature must still approve any payments.

The panel recommended Tuesday that the money go to living victims, including those who are alive now but may die before the lawmakers approve any compensation.

The state sterilized more than 7,600 people between 1929 and 1974. A task force report last year said 1,500 to 2,000 of those victims are still alive, and the state has verified 72 victims.

You are exactly right! While I think it was a gross error on the part of government to engage in this activity, by agreeing to pay these victims a Pandora’s box is being thrown open and I see the NAACP coming to bat for payments for slave descendents.

now that there is a precedent for paying past wrongs…look for the slavery payments to commence…

Too bad the parents of these legislators were not sterilized before their offspring were born. The program made sense and was logical. Why should mentally deficient people breed and bring more mentally deficient into the world for taxpayers to support from cradle to grave? There are enough like this now with nothing wrong with their minds. When is somebody going to start thinking about those who foot the bill for such?

  • I believe it has already been tried in War World II Germany.

Why were these people sterilized? I would assume they were mentally handicapped or something? Frankly the few people I have been around with mental handicaps would be a better parent than say Jenelle Evans from Teen Mom. I say sterilize her and all the other nitwits that get pregnant at 16, then go on to sell themselves on tv ha

    Hitler thought the same thing.

Don’t use my tax money to correct past practices. That’s what is wrong with our government now. They are idiots. Today’s government needs to dwell on the future, not the past. OUR GOVERNMENT SUCKS.

…that we should sterilize a woman simply because she’s spitting out a new little bastard every year or two, with no concern whatsoever about how to feed, clothe, or house them.

By God, having eight kids on Medicaid is her RIGHT!

(And if you think that’s hyperbole, check with Craven County DSS. They have one with eight kids and one with five kids.)

Maybe all of Hitler’s ideas were not bad.

  • Das Weibstück

The people set to get this money are the actual people that were sterilized.

  • Guest2020

I don’t believe in the government paying such reparations, but there is a big difference between this and the slavery issue. The actual victims of this practice are still alive. There is no one still alive that was a slave in the US before it became illegal.

and you have THAT much faith in the US Justice system today….LOL..Your so cute!

This program was the bigoted Democrats attempt to wipe out a whole race which is just one more policy they have in common with the National Socialist.

Eugenics was an ill conceived program started well before Hitler’s use of the program. It was brought about by some very enlightened people of their day and yes many bigots too. It was developed during a period in human history when there was very little understanding of human psychology. Remember the saying , that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing ? It was rooted in that. The appalling fact is that was continued for so long, during many years that we knew better but took no action as a country to correct the practice. That was the evil part of the movement.

If you are put in prison for a crime that later was found out you were not guilty of then society offers you some compensation. That is a fact. I leave you with your own determination as what you then think would be correct thing to do for the victims of eugenics.

  • Gota heart

I can only Pray for the people that posted such appalling comments above! I am not large enough to make any wrongs right nor saving ones souls that need to be saved from such wickedness and wicked tongues! May God have mercy on all that were involved in this act back then and all you that are so quick to use your apilt tongues! I know some mentally challenged and I have a DARLING niece with Down Syn. You all are a disgracce to the human kind!!!!!! I think there isn’t enough money in the world to make this right!
