JACKSONVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- An official has told the Associated Press that the Marine Corps has identified at least two of the four Marines in an internet video that purports to depict them urinating on Taliban corpses in Afghanistan.

The Marine official told the AP that the four were members of the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, which returned to their home base at Camp Lejeune last fall after a tour in Afghanistan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because a criminal investigation is under way.

In a statement, Gen. James F. Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps said he has reviewed the video.

"I want to be clear and unambiguous, the behavior depicted in the video is wholly inconsistent with the high standards of conduct and warrior ethos that we have demonstrated throughout our history," Gen. Amos said. "Accordingly, late yesterday I requested that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service pull together a team of their very best agents and immediately assign them responsibility to thoroughly investigate every aspect of the filmed event. Additionally, I am assigning a Marine General Officer and senior attorney, both with extensive combat experience, to head up an internal Preliminary Inquiry into the matter. Once the investigation and Preliminary Inquiry are complete and the facts have been determined, then the Marine Corps will take the appropriate next steps. Rest assured that the institution of the Marine Corps will not rest until the allegations and the events surrounding them have been resolved. We remain fully committed to upholding the Geneva Convention, the Laws of War, and our own core values."

The official who spoke to the AP said that at least some of the four Marines are no longer in that battalion. He provided no other details.

Good Order and Discipline...and Honor.

It goes without saying that the video recorded urination by Marines on enemy corpses cannot be tolerated..for some very good reasons..not the least of which is the necessity of maintaining good order and discipline..Unit cohesion depends on it..If we lose that, we lose everything..absolutely everything.

That said, I think the leadership should show a little "good order and discipline" themselves...Clearly, these Marines actions deserve an investigation..and likely a low level field grade punishment..Loss of rank, pay....That's it!!

To those who insist on publicly stripping these men down and trashing them for political motives (or any other reason) please, first, strip them of their combat awards, Purple Hearts, Silver Stars etc..

After all, we don't want anyone to know that they actually sacrificed everything so our children could sleep safely at night and so women, little girls and boys of Afghanistan could have a decent shot at growing up, attending school and having a chance to build a nation free of the unspeakable tyranny of the Taliban and Al Quaida..

Then let'em get back to their work..Obviously, they're damn good at it.

I have been where they were

I have been where they were and I’ll tell you what, the actions of these marines were deplorable! You say that they should not be punished for their WAR CRIMES you are absolutely wrong. They decreased our Uniform and our Country. They need to be Court Marshaled and kicked out of the Marine Corps and then Indicted for committing war crimes. Especially since this is exactly the type of material that the Taliban use to recruit thousands more to their cause. So all of you that think that this is not a big deal but those thoughts on the backs of the sons and daughter that won’t becoming home due to this video.

Piss on em all

I hope the grunts had go aim!

Sgt Grit need a new bumper sticker to sell. " Piss on em all"

God Bless the grunts!

Semper Fi, this is war. You can't train men to kill and then listen to yuppie paintball media people on how to fight a war. I get so tired of seeing America bend to the whims of these terrorists. Urinating on a dead enemy isn't something that should have even made the news. Now they will blame all failed policy in this war on those Marines. What a joke.

My first question is where

My first question is where is the leadership? I am sure some of our younger leaders are asking themselves what they would have done in that situation. It is a tough dilemma for any leader, this enemy is treacherous. As leaders we know our personal beliefs and philsophies and we know and are guided by the Corps Values.
We also know how to train Marines to fight aggressively and win; and we know our leadership responsibility.

Any person that wants to be a leader bears along with that authority, the ultimate and heaviest responsibility. As leaders, it is up to us to inculcate our Marines with a fighting spirit and the values that guide our Corps and country. As leaders it is our duty to lead, guide, and mentor our Marines. We set the moral compass toward the Corps Values. We must put those ideals into action by our own example, and setting a strong leadership climate.

Defense of Marines

Do not be naive enought to think in the history of all U.S theatres of war, that this is the first time poor judgement has been used by American soldiers. While it is a unprofessional act, when engaged in combat you have to give them some leniency.Combat is a stressful environment that clouds judgement from time to time but overall these young men get the job done that they were asked to do.That is kill the enemy.Once you flip the switch to this mentality, it is game on until it is time to assimilate back into the "civilized' world. You are either the hunted or the hunter in combat, therefore it is a sense of relief to survive another day. These young men were venting their relief, although an immature act.You have to let it go.The PC media ,government officials and military brass will let it be a big dog and pony show because from the comfort of their homes it is easy to play armchair QB. Put a weapon in their hands and on occasion in a high stress environment they would act irrational and irresponsible. The high tech gadgets that are now mainstream make it much easier to disseminate images that have no business leaving the theatre of operation.

URINATING ON THE DEAD

THIS IS NOT THE BEST SUBJECT TO TALK ABOUT BUT, YOU ASK A MARINE TO PUT HIS LIFE ON THE LINE FOR YOU AND YOU WANT TO PUNISH TRHEM FOR THAT? WHAT IDIOT TOOK THE VIDEO? CHEW THEM OUT PUBLICLY AND PUT BACK TO WORK. I WOULD NOT HAVE DONE THIS IN MY TIME IN THE CORPS BUT, BACK OFF AND LET'S WIN SOMETHING FOR A CHANGE.

yawn

...pissing on the bad guys....sooooooo what's the big deal? Love me some marines!OORAH!!

Interesting

I think it's interesting we are stressing over peeing on them but putting a bullet in them doesn't draw such ire? I wonder which the victims would rather be, urinated on or shot dead! Forum entities... lmao...

I don't have a problem with either myself....

Integrity

The United States Marines are one of the most respected well-trained fighting forces on the face of the earth. We, as Americans, choke up with pride when we see them. The Marines are the ones who are called upon for the toughest of assignments. They stand for honor, for dignity, for morality....what these men did; even in war is not the behavior of a United States Marine. We cannot allow them to tarnish the reputation of the Marine Corps.

This is no honor in this.

This is no honor in this. Fallen soldiers or enemies in any battle should be treated with more respect considering they are no longer alive and entering some sort of afterlife.

Pantano

Did someone mention Snooki Pantano on here? The same guy who mentions he was in the Marines every time he opens his mouth? The one who got his butt beat in 2010?He needs to go back to the Jersey Shore and run for something. But everyone up there knows hes a know it all piece of crap. Thats why he ran down here on his wifes coat tails and checkbook!

Ok so they killed these guys..

Took their very lives, sent them into eternity, removed them from existence and what people find so horrifying is that they peed on them after shredding their vital organs with bullets! LOL! When I'm dead, pee all over me. I promise I won't care. If it's a beautiful woman, all the better.

Good for Them

Who gives a damn about some dead enemy terroist getting urinated on. I certainly do not and I am a disabled veteran. If still in I would use them as grease for my tank tracks. Only some liberal crybabies who have never worn a uniform get upset. To hell with them, give these Marines a medal!

So you and General James

So you and General James Amos, the Marine Corp Commandant have different ideas about this.

Maybe that is why he is Commandant and you are not?

UNDERMINES COALITION EFFORT AND GOOD WILL

This video will get more Americans killed. As a former Marine, I hope their actions do not put the remainder of their unit (still deployed…) in harm's way. As with Abu Grabe, it will serve as a recruiting tool and fundraising vehicle for insurgents and undermine all the good the unit - and the Marine Corps - and our Armed Forces - and the United States - and our tax dollars - and our Allies - has done over there.

Marine urinating

If it were you or a family member over there and you saw them pissing on the Taliban I am quite sure you would cheer and root them on as they are risking their lives for us while they are serving. What a WASTE of money to investigate just who it was when you can plainly see their faces and know what squad they are serving in. Of course, it is a sign of their frustration at being there in the 1st place, but I am sure they are not the 1st soldiers to ever piss on a body while serving their country. What about all the Muslims over there that do worse to our soldiers when they kill or capture them and film just what they do and send it out over the internet for the whole world to see. Of course, we Americans are supposed to be perfect while the rest of the world is not?

Ok, let me get this straight.

We can blow people of questionable identify to kingdom come with drones. We can send Navy SEALs from DevGru on what was essentially an assassination mission to put a bullet in the heads of mostly unarmed people, steal the corpse of one of them and dump it in the ocean. We can send these specific Marines to kill these Taliban but peeing on a corpse after they filled it with bullets is such an atrocious act? Somehow I don't think the urine was the worst thing to happen to the former occupant of that corpse that day.

I do not have a problem with

I do not have a problem with it, look at what they do to our dead soldiers, it is alot worse than what our guys did. So will the neg commets, if it was our soldiers there dead I guess it would be ok.

marines

Maybe its just me but I watched that video 5 times (small & full screen) and I did not see any urine. It looked to me as if they were all faking taking a leak. I didnt see any "pink" where a penis should be if being held to urinate. Looks like a bit of joking around over some dead guys.

Hey... at least the Marines didn't CUT their heads off while they were still alive like the sand-fleas do to Americans !

semper fi

We have seen our dead servicemen dragged behind trucks with signs around their necks, we have seen them put up against the wall and AK 47's emptied into their dead bodies. We have watched videos of marine corp barracks blown apart and bodies laying all over the area and we watched on television as people from that place dancing in the street on 9-11. Now we send these young men into harms way and don't expect an emotional response after a fire fight. I wish I was young enough to have been there with them, to tell these nice people to have a nice day. Anyone, politicians or bureaucrat's that berate our troops for this act are traitors and un-AMERICAN. I for one think they are hero's fighting a war that most politicians and bureaucrat's have not and would not tread.
SEMPER FI

The Marines are representing

The Marines are representing us, as Americans......and Americans are better than this.

You're right, Americans are

You're right, Americans are better than this. Instead of politicians sending them to other countries to be killed, they need to be here in the US dealing with internal issues such as urban blight, poverty and political corruption. Other nations have the freedom and right to govern the way they choose, the US needs to stay out of it. Unless and until they attack the US itself.

Guest777

Guest777, go do some research instead of regurgitating DNC talking points. And by the way, how disgusted have you been at atrocities committed by Al Qaeda?

Now this happens and you libs are going to FAKE anger solely to make a pathetic point.

Golden Rule... Not Golden Shower.

I completely do not condone this action. As a veteran I hold our military to a higher standard than the dirtbags who attacked us on 9/11. We are better than this. And these Marines absolutely should know that they overstepped there bounds.

They did not over step their

They did not over step their bounds in my book, The video poster did.

And you just showed everyone your moral code.

This act is deplorable period. It doesn't matter if they made a video or not. It became deplorable the moment the act happened. These men chose to dishonor themselves, and the uniform they wear the moment they decided to engage in such an act. Your moral code is out of whack thinking you can do dispicable acts and it's okay as long as you don't get caught.

And you just showed how you think everyone should be like you.

Who are you to say my "moral code is out of whack"... you dont even know me. I have never walked around looking to see what i can get away with, I choose right from wrong and have done so throughout my life. I just do not think they should have allowed it to be recorded and subsequently, released. Perhaps if you could show me in the bible where it says "Thall shall not urinate on thy fallen enemies after they tryeth to kill you" I might give a damn, but when when muslim extremist started this war and ever since, conducted operations consistantly outside of the Geneva Convention, All bets are off. Thank You for your service though.

Well

I agree with you on one hand. In an ideal world, our troops should never display this kind of disgusting behavior.

On the other hand, if the Taliban can behead live Americans, I doubt a little peeing on them after they're dead is worth raising a stink about.

Where's the outrage?

voiced by the White House when the Taliban mutilates the corpse of a dead American? But let our guys pi$$ on a Taliban and the whole world gets in an uproar!
