LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) -- New details in the shooting death of an attempted robber at a store yesterday in Lake Waccamaw.

Police say Charles Hickman, the owner of Waccamaw Outdoor Supply, shot the suspect after firing multiple warning shots.

Police are still not releasing the name of the man killed, but they say that he had no criminal record or history of drug use. Investigators say he was armed with a hammer and was wearing a bandana. Police say the man may have had some mental issues.

No grand jury in the county

No grand jury in the county will indict the store owner. Glad I moved to TX, where you have the right to protect your life AND property!

The storeowner has an obligation to his own family also.

He is only defending his life and property. ANYthing intended to do harm is a potential weapon, i.e. a letter-opener, tire-iron, shovel...or a hammer.

Kudos to the store owner, he

Kudos to the store owner, he stopped future crimes and prolonged his own life. Before reading the article I was almost sure that the one with the hammer had to be from Brunswick Co.

Sad

On the surface, this sounds like the beginning of a bad joke; "A man walks in to rob a gun store with a hammer..."

Then again, it's a very sad situation. A person chose to attempt to commit a crime and paid the ultimate price. The store owner didn't have the luxury of asking the robber if he was "mentally unstable" or if he actually planned to use the hammer if he didn't get his way. It was a tragedy set in motion by the robber and he alone had control of the outcome.

What if the robber were successful in his quest? Stolen guns in the hands of a crook? It's entirely possible that the store owner prevented future gun-related crime by stopping this person.

Quick to Assume???

Ok, considering everyones opinion.......have we all really thought out the realm of possibilites in this scenario? We can all agree that the owner had the right to defend himself of the would be robber (enough said on that). But have we stopped to consider why someone would rob a business that sells guns & bullets(with a hammer)??? That sounds like desparity: maybe due to mental illness or being threatened or being bullied....all I'm suggesting is to think outside the newslines. If it were someone you knew that had never committed a crime and this was totally outside of their personality.......the true devestation would be not understanding. I have empathy to all involved and pray for peace to the families.

You also assume that since

You also assume that since he doesn't have a record that he has never committed a crime before. He doesn't have a record could just mean that he had never been caught. If someone I knew was stupid enough to try to rob a gun store, I would still believe that the person being robbed had the right to defend himself. Also, I can assure you that a person carrying any weapon in a business with the intention of robbing the place is there for a party. He is there to do harm. He took his own life into his own hands with what he did.

One more thing, a lot of people with mental issues still know the difference between right and wrong. That's why the courts still hold them accountable for their actions.

Do you believe all armed robbers to be smart?

Not the first time a robbery was attempted by an inadequate weapon. We have Dumb Crook News and the Darwin Files to prove that. However, there's been many a person killed with a hammer! Do you expect the store owner to drop his gun and get a pair of pliers to fend off the assailant? "Hold on thar Kilroy, I need to change weapons so this can be a fair fight...gimme five minutes to get through the tools isle...I'll be right back" -Fade to black-

"Alright Kilroy...I'm back, but let me have a mental evaluation done on ya afore I try to stop ya from robbing me, ah gotta itchin' that something ain't right here...gimme another five.

He HAD commited another crime...he tried to rob the man previously. Thinking "outside the newslines" is one thing. Being rediculously creative and going to Pluto is yet another....

Assumptions

Sorry, but you seem pretty quick to "assume" also ("maybe due to mental illness or being threatened or being bullied").

If someone robs a business that sells guns with a sledgehammer, maybe it's just because the robber didn't own a gun and grabbed the biggest weapon he had on hand. Or maybe it's because he's a bad shot and is more comfortable using a hammer. See, I can assume too, can't I? All that you have suggested is speculation; it's not based on facts. What you call "thinking outside the newslines" is what I call unfactual assumptions.

"If it were someone you knew that had never committed a crime and this was totally outside of their personality" - Well, this wasn't the case. He robbed the place before (without a weapon).

The point is that the robber caused his own death the minute he walked in the door with that hammer. Done.

CHECK IT OUT>>>>>

I KNOW THE OWNER'S SURED HAVE A VIDEO IN STORE,BY HIM SELLING GUNS. SOMEONE NEEDS TO CHECK THAT OUT ALSO THE MAN THAT SAID THAT HE TRIED TO ROB THE STORE ONE DAY LAST WEEK WHO IS HE TO TALK.. THEY MUST HAVE PAID HIM TO SAY THAT..... NOW YOU TALKING ABOUT A DRUG HEAD THAT'S ONE.... HELLO??????

Dude, seriously...Please

Dude, seriously...Please learn how to type.

Learn English

Please learn english and then try again. Epic fail!!

JUSTICE?????

I WOULD HATE TO KNOW THAT A MAN CAME INTO MY BUSINESS WITH A HAMMER SHOVEL OR RAKE AND A BROWN BAG AND I HAD A BIG GUN OF ANY KIND AND I WAS SO AFRAID OF HIM THAT I HAD TO SHOOT HIM IN THE HEAD ESPECIALLY FROM THE BACK OF THE HEAD YOU MUST HAVE BEEN SOME KIND OF SCARED. I REALLY THINK YOU HAVE MESSED UP MY FRIEND????? ALL YOU INSTIGATORS AND SO CALL FRIENDS TRYING TO BOOST YOU UP LIKE YOU DID THE RIGHT THING . I AS A JUDGE, BUT NOT THE FINAL JUDGE WANT TO SEE HOW MUCH SUPPORT YOU HAVE WHEN THE RUBBER MEET THE ROAD. THIS WAS NOT SELF DEFENCE AND JUSTIC WILL BE IN ORDER....YOUR TWO SHOTS COULD HAVE BEEN AFTER YOU KILLED HIM TO COVER UP YOUR TRACK . ONE STORY TO BE TOLD, YOU TELL IT AND I WILL BE LISTENING.......

Yes Justice.

What part of this story do you not understand? He had every right to shoot the low life punk. How exactly did he mess up? Should he have laid down and gave in? Just closed his eyes and hope for the best like you would do? Justice will be in order? Hahaha from whom? You are 2 much of a coward to dispence it. But yes, there is only one story to be told, because the other idiot is DEAD!!!

He didn't have to shoot him

He didn't have to shoot him in the head I hope they press charges and you better have a change of heart before you burn in HELL.....

It's is Justice

I deem this as justice if anyone comes in my business with any sort of weapon I don't care what it is, i will use self defense. I don't care what he has. The guy went into that business for a reason with a hammer and that was to rob it. Granted the police say he has no criminal record, that doesn't mean anything. This could have been his beginning of a criminal record.

On top of that if he had mental issues you don't mess with someone who has those issues because you never know what they will do or what they are thinking.

I fully support the store owner and what he did. It is his business and he feared his life and store was in danger and took the proper self defense.

Someone breaks into my home it will be worst decision they ever made! I have no sympathy for people who think it's okay to break into someones home rob it and or rob someones store. These people are up to know good and you get what you deserve when you attempt to rob a store.

The way I look at it another robber off the street and one less mouth to feed in jail. Our tax dollars aren't going towards him!

BTW you say you are a judge (but not final decision), go back check your grammar and word usage!

Justice HAS BEEN SERVED!

JUSTICE""""""

A DEAD MAN CAN'T TALK, THE SHOOTER GOT THE UPPER HAND .... WE DON'T NO WHAT THE MAN WAS DOING THERE (DO YOU), JUSTICE WILL BE DONE........ WE HEARD ONE SIDE OF THE STORY, ALL I'AM SAYING THE DETECTIVES NEED TO CHECK OUT THE [VIDEO TAPE], UNLESS THEY GOT RID OF IT.... SOME PEOPLE ARE SO HATEFUL IN THIS WORLD INCLUDING YOU.... BOO

Yep, it's justice

Yes, it is justice. If a robber came into my store with a weapon, he’s intending to rob me, and perhaps my customers, and intends to do us bodily harm. If he’s robbed me before, that makes him more dangerous, because he’s braver now since he got away with it previously.

Who says the robber was shot in the back of the head? Nothing I’ve read about this case says that. Who says two shots were fired by the clerk after he was killed? I haven’t read anything about that either. You’re making up alternate stories, not based on facts, to justify your position. You sound like you have some mental issues, and need some serious help.

What it all boils down to is that the robber placed himself in a position where he could get killed. He knew it was dangerous to try to rob a store, and that’s why he took a weapon with him. This whole situation was forced on a clerk who was only trying to make an honest living. He had to defend himself so that he could return to his family that night. I don’t blame him. He did what he had to do. I would have done the same thing, except I wouldn’t have fired any warning shots. The robber dug his own grave.

Get the facts

He did not shoot him in the back of the head. He shot him in the upper side near the temple and it came out the back of the head.

Get the facts...

hell, it don't matter now the man is dead.. he ment to killed him ......

Where ?

Did it mention anything about the back of the head ?

A waste

If you have the right to use deadly force, don't waste the bullets on warning shots. Shoot to eliminate the threat.

well

"Police say the man may have had some mental issues."

Not any more.
