SAMPSON COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — School was closed on Monday, but the gym was open at Union High School in Sampson County. The Fourth Annual MLK Basketball Jamfest is an all-day event with several local teams taking part.

Hoggard played Jack Britt in the first game of the event.

Tyler Thayer hit five three pointers and scored 21 points for the Vikings. Hoggard led by as many as 20 in the second half. Trevor Singleton added 15 points for the Vikes. They held on for a 68-62 win.

“You never know when you play on a non-school day in the afternoon like this, you don’t know how things are going to be, but our guys were really focused and really good for three quarters,” Hoggard coach Brett Queen said. “That’s the first time we’ve ever beaten them. Of course, the other two times we played them were in sectional finals.”

In game number two Pine Forest led New Hanover by 8 at the half. The Wildcats pulled even in the second half, but the Trojans played better half court offense than New Hanover at the end. Pine Forest beat New Hanover 67-61. It’s the first loss of the season for the #2 ranked team in the state. Kadeem Allen led the Wildcats with 16 points. Allen got into foul trouble early in the game. Mike Hickey added 14 for New Hanover. Nigel Holley scored 12.

Laney and Westover were tied with just a few minutes to go, but the Wolverines the Bucs 68-57. Senior Elijah Wilson led the Bucs with 25 points.
