STATESVILLE, NC (AP) — Iredell County commissioners have voted against a plan to expand commuter and freight rail service in the Charlotte region, possibly killing the project.

The commission voted 5-0 on Tuesday against the Red Line Regional Rail project. Commission members say they are not confident in the financial plan for the project.

The $452 million project would bring 25 miles of rail service between Lowe’s headquarters in Mount Mourne and Charlotte.

Supporters say the Red Line would create thousands of jobs and ease traffic congestion in the area.

But Iredell commission Chairman Steve Johnson says regional rail projects around the country have a history of cost overruns.

Seven county and city governments have to agree to the project before it can go forward. Supporters hope they can change Iredell commissioners’ minds.
