WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- As we told you yesterday, New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger sent another scathing e-mail this week to fellow county leaders. Now some his colleagues are firing back.
"There is no way I'm going to back down short of losing in the court of law," Berger said at this afternoon's agenda briefing.
Berger plans to keep on fighting his removal from several community boards last month. In an e-mail this week, he demanded a legal explanation from the county.
"My removal from the DSS Board is certainly illegal," Berger said.
But according to the county attorney and manager, nothing illegal happened.
Commissioner Jason Thompson said Berger's e-mails to his fellow commissioners are just silly. He says there is no reason for Berger to keep asking the same thing over and over again.
"I'm tired of it," Thompson said. "I'm going to say what I've been saying for the past year: quit making empty threats. Quit crying wolf when there's no wolf."
Thompson says unlike the other commissioners, who tend to ignore Berger's e-mails, he wants to bring Berger's issues out in the open.
"I think just publicly we need to have a big meeting and air it all out, and if you can prove something, prove it, and if you can't, then shut up about it," Thompson said.
But, like Berger, Thompson doesn't seem to think this will end any time soon.
"No, I don't think so from what I've seen so far, but that's up to Commissioner Berger, but if he wants to end this he can," Thompson said. "I mean, he's heard the answer several times, but it is the answer, but you can't keep asking because you don't like what you hear."
County commissioners have a regular meeting Monday at 9 a.m.
