WASHINGTON, DC (AP) — The Department of Defense says more than 6,000 soldiers with units at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Stewart in Georgia are heading to Afghanistan in the spring.
In a statement, the Pentagon said Thursday the units will begin to deploy in the spring of 2012. Officials gave no further details on the timing.
The units include about 1,000 men and women with the 3rd Infantry Division Headquarters based at Fort Stewart, GA.
The rotation also includes about 5,800 soldiers from Fort Bragg. They are members of the 1st Brigade Combat Team and the 4th Brigade Combat Team, both with the 82nd Airborne Division.
