WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you want to park in one of the City of Wilmington’s downtown decks, you have to pay 24 hours a day.

Over the weekend, new machines went online to let drivers swipe their credit card at the two parking structures. It’s part of an overall effort to begin collecting fees in city decks 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Drivers can make payments via credit card when there is no personnel on duty.

Park Wilmington staff will continue to collect fees after the bars close on Friday and Saturday nights and for major downtown events.

I just don’t understand why Wilmington does everything it can to harass downtown merchants and discourage customers from even going downtown. It is unbelievable the lengths they go to make everyone despise them.

Who said it was safe to park in the parking deck? Have you seen the ‘people’ who mill around the parking decks? Have you been up there at night, alone, getting to your car?

Too many people downtown, shopping and eating/drinking! That’ll keep ’em away! Smart idea, City!

This will only hurt the local restaurants and vendors, I personally am not going to pay to park only to go into a restaurant and get breakfast or go into a store for 10 minutes.
Big Mistake in a tough economy. Everyone will be going to Mayfair on the weekends now too.

If any of the city clowns owned a restaurants this wouldnt happen, saffo must think he deserves a raise that’s why its happening.

as if there wasn’t ENOUGH reason not to go downtown…

These things, AND WORSE, are all over downtown. It’s disgusting.

Maybe the extra fees will be used to clean up the cigarette butts, beer cans, and urine smell in the stairwells?

  • GuestReality

Well, if some people wouldn’t toss cigarette butts and beer cans, and then urinate in the parking decks, there would be nothing to clean up, would there?

The city does its best to clean this sh*t up, but partiers just keep throwing it down and p*ssing on it. The city’s fighting a losing battle. Some people are just nasty. I would hate to see their homes.

What this article fails to mention is that the first 60 minutes in the parking decks are still free.

My understanding is that this change is basically to make people pay who had been parking for free when the parking stations aren’t manned, which is about 80 hours a week.
