SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The NC Department of Transportation will hold a meeting tomorrow about the proposed rate increase on the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry and other ferry routes up the coast.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the ILA Union Hall. That’s at 211 West 10th Street in Southport.

The meeting will start with a formal presentation about the toll increase. Following the presentation, citizens can make comments and ask questions.

The state has to increase ferry revenue by $5 million. That means ferry fares will likely double.

It is cheaper (depending on what you drive) now to drive to Pleasure Island than take the ferry, so if rates are raised or doubled, they might as well close it except for tourists during the season. I won’t be riding it any more.
