CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — A former U.S. senator and peace envoy to world trouble spots is reflecting about the Middle East for a North Carolina audience.

Diplomat and peace negotiator George Mitchell is in Charlotte on Wednesday. He’ll be at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Center City campus.

The Democratic former Senate majority leader from Maine was President Obama’s Middle East peace special envoy for more than two years before leaving that post last year. He worked as President Bill Clinton’s representative in talks that brought peace to Northern Ireland and was honored by the United Nations.

Mitchell also spent two years leading the investigation into the use of performance enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball.

TIME Magazine named him one of the 100 most influential persons in the world In 2008.
