RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The Legislature’s fiscal watchdog agency says the state of North Carolina should close an Elizabeth City museum, a Kinston historic site and reduce operating hours at seven other locations to reduce operating expenses at attractions with high costs and low visitor traffic.

The Program Evaluation Division’s report released Tuesday calculated that these and other recommendations would save only about $2 million annually. The report’s authors examined dozens of public attractions operated by the departments of Cultural Resources and Environment and Natural Resources. They determined it did not make sense to consolidate oversight of the attractions under one roof.

The report suggested the Museum of the Albemarle be closed and the Richard Caswell Memorial be closed once the remnants of a Civil War gun boat there are moved.
