NEW HANOVER CO., NC (WWAY) — An afternoon fire has destroyed a New Hanover County apartment building.

A witness saw the fire at Meridian Village on Southeast Northchase Parkway and called 911 around 2 p.m. Witnesses say they could see flames as far away as Laney High School.

New Hanover County Fire Marshal Matt Davis says no one was hurt, and it appears the apartments were empty when the fire started. Davis said the building destroyed included eight units.

Investigators do not yet know what started the fire.
